Patrick Vieira Appointed Head Coach of Senegal National Team
Patrick Vieira returns home. Not to Arsenal, not to the Premier League, but to the country of his birth and a job heavy with expectation: head coach of Senegal.
The Senegalese federation confirmed the appointment in a statement announcing “Mr Patrick Vieira is the new coach of the Senegalese national A team,” adding that details of his official presentation and installation will follow. The message ended with a simple line that carries plenty of weight: “Welcome to Senegal, coach.”
He replaces Pape Thiaw, dismissed after Senegal’s exit to Belgium in the last 32 at this summer’s World Cup. That defeat ended a campaign that never quite caught fire, and the federation has now turned to a name with global resonance and a bulging medal collection.
A decorated playing career, a restless coach
Vieira, born in Senegal before moving to France as a child, built his legend elsewhere. At Arsenal he became the heartbeat of Arsène Wenger’s great sides, winning three Premier League titles and defining an era in English football with his power, authority and edge in midfield.
On the international stage he reached the very top with France, lifting the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000. Few coaches walk into an African national team job with that kind of playing résumé behind them.
His coaching path has been more nomadic. After early work in the United States with New York City, he returned to Europe to take charge of Nice, then stepped into the Premier League spotlight with Crystal Palace. The south London club dismissed him in March 2023, and he moved on to Strasbourg as head coach before a 12‑month spell in Serie A with Genoa, which ended last November.
Since then, he has been out of work. Now, the call has come from Dakar.
A new era for Senegal
For Senegal, this is a statement appointment. A World Cup and European Championship winner, an iconic former captain of Arsenal, and a coach who has tasted the intensity of top‑flight football in England, France, Italy and MLS now takes charge of a team searching for its next step on the global stage.
The federation has not yet set the date for his unveiling, but the clock is already ticking. Qualifiers, tournaments, expectations – they all come quickly at this level.
Vieira arrives with a glittering past and a point to prove in the dugout. Senegal offers him both a homecoming and a test. How quickly he can turn pedigree into progress will define whether this is a romantic return, or the start of something far more powerful.
