Orlando Pirates' Patrick Maswanganyi Set for Overseas Move
Orlando Pirates star Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi is on the brink of an overseas move, with the Soweto giants believed to have all but wrapped up negotiations with an unnamed Asian Football Confederation club for the 28-year-old playmaker.
The first real sign something was up came in Polokwane. Maswanganyi was nowhere to be seen at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium as Pirates edged Sekhukhune United 1-0 in the first leg of their semifinal, Deon Hotto providing the only goal. After the match, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou cut through any speculation about a knock or strain: Maswanganyi was not injured. His absence, then, spoke louder than any team sheet.
From that moment, the transfer talk moved from background noise to near-certainty.
From instant hero to looming farewell
Pirates prised Maswanganyi from SuperSport United in 2023, and he wasted no time justifying the move. He clicked with the Buccaneers’ attack almost immediately, turned into a crowd favourite, and played a key role in last season’s historic league triumph – the club’s first title since 2012, and the one that finally knocked Mamelodi Sundowns off their domestic throne.
Given that context, the club’s looming reshuffle feels seismic.
It had seemed Pirates might steady the ship after already cashing in on one major asset. Relebohile Mofokeng, reigning Footballer of the Year and the team’s creative heartbeat, left for Belgian topflight side Union Saint-Gilloise shortly after the FIFA World Cup. That sale alone looked like the big departure of the window.
Yet the exits have kept coming. Right-back Deano van Rooyen’s departure after two years at the club was confirmed, trimming experience from the backline. Now Maswanganyi, who featured in every fixture leading up to the trip to face Sekhukhune, appears set to follow him out of the door.
For a side fresh off a title win, that is a lot of quality walking away in a short space of time.
Another crack at life abroad
Maswanganyi will not be stepping into the unknown. As a teenager, he left the Stars of Africa Academy for Portugal, spending several formative years in Europe before returning home to rebuild his career. That early exposure to a different football culture should soften the landing in Asia, wherever his next destination lies within the AFC.
On the international stage, “Tito” has four Bafana Bafana caps, a modest tally that doesn’t quite reflect his club influence. Timing has not been kind. He missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the start of the year and watched the World Cup from afar after slipping down the national team pecking order.
A strong stint abroad could change that picture again.
For Pirates, though, the equation is stark: another leader of last season’s title charge is on his way. The question now is not whether Maswanganyi goes, but how the Buccaneers rebuild the heart of a championship team that is being ripped out piece by piece.
