Nottingham Forest Sign Delap from Chelsea for £50m
Nottingham Forest have made a major statement in the transfer market, sealing the signing of Delap from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £45m, with a further £5m tied to add-ons.
The 23-year-old striker has committed to a long-term contract at the City Ground running until 2031, leaving Stamford Bridge after just a single season. For Chelsea, it represents sharp business: they bank an instant £20m profit after paying around £30m to prise him from Ipswich Town in June 2025.
Delap buys into Glasner’s vision
Delap arrives talking like a man ready to lead the line and embrace the pressure.
"I really can't wait to get started, this is a massive club with a big history," he told club media, laying out his excitement at the move. He revealed that talks with head coach Oliver Glasner proved decisive, backing the Austrian’s methods to unlock the next stage of his development.
"I spoke to the manager and I like his way, I think he can be the one to really help me develop and make that next step and hopefully I can bring goals here," Delap said.
The forward also homed in on the atmosphere that awaits him at the City Ground.
"I can't wait to hear the noise at the City Ground and have the fans on my side because I know how loud and important they are. As a team we can build something really strong and the main aim is to challenge and be a top club in the Premier League."
A proven threat despite Chelsea struggle
On paper, one league goal in his solitary season at Chelsea hardly screams £50m striker. Forest clearly see beyond that headline.
Delap’s reputation was forged at Ipswich Town in the 2024-25 campaign, when he hit 12 league goals in a struggling side that ultimately went down. Even as Ipswich slid towards relegation, he kept dragging them up the pitch with his running power and directness.
He recorded 26 shot-ending carries that season – the highest figure of any Premier League striker – underlining how his pace, strength and aggressive ball-carrying can rip through defensive lines. That blend of physicality and intent is exactly what Forest are gambling on at the top end of the pitch.
Battle for the No 9 shirt
Life at Forest will be anything but comfortable. Delap walks straight into a crowded centre-forward department.
He will scrap for minutes with Chris Wood, Igor Jesus and Arnaud Kalimuendo in what shapes up as a fierce four-way fight for the starting role. Glasner now has very different profiles to choose from, and Delap will have to prove quickly that he is more than just the expensive new arrival.
His first chance could come immediately. Forest head to Anfield this weekend to face Liverpool, still stinging from back-to-back defeats against Leeds United in both the Premier League opener and the Carabao Cup.
It is a brutal stage on which to debut, but also the perfect one. Forest have paid for a ruthless, imposing No 9. Now the City Ground wants to see if Delap can live up to that price tag – and change the direction of their season.
