Nico Gonzalez Exit Approved by Manchester City as Newcastle Pursues £52m Deal
Manchester City have told Nico Gonzalez he is free to leave before the window closes – even as some of his teammates make a late push to convince him to stay.
Newcastle United have already moved into position. Desperate to reinforce their midfield after the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, the Magpies have opened talks over a deal for the 24-year-old, holding what have been described as “exploratory conversations”, according to The Athletic.
City’s £52 million signing from FC Porto in January last year has never truly settled into a regular role under Pep Guardiola. With Rodri untouchable at the base of midfield and Mateo Kovacic trusted ahead of him, Gonzalez found himself on the fringes last season, his minutes shrinking as the campaign wore on.
The picture has not improved. The arrival of Elliot Anderson and advanced negotiations with Lille for Ayyoub Bouaddi have pushed Gonzalez closer to the exit. City’s stance is clear: he can go.
Newcastle sense an opportunity.
Gonzalez is understood to be one of three midfielders on their shortlist, but he is viewed as the leading target at this stage. Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope reports that the Spaniard is “open” to joining Eddie Howe’s side, even as several City teammates have tried to talk him into staying at the Etihad.
The timing is striking. At the start of the month, Gonzalez publicly insisted he was content in Manchester and ready to fight for his place. Speaking after a friendly win over K-League All Stars in South Korea, he said: “I’m happy here. I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here.
“I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position.
“That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”
Some inside the club believed the appointment of Enzo Maresca could reset his situation. The hope was that a fresh voice on the training pitch might open a new path into the side. Yet the evidence from the Community Shield was blunt: Gonzalez again sat behind Kovacic in the pecking order.
Now the reality of another season on the margins is biting. City, strengthened in his area of the pitch, are prepared to cash in. Newcastle, short of midfield craft and control after two high-profile sales, are pushing to bring him to Tyneside.
The window is closing fast. The question for Gonzalez is simple: stay and fight for scraps at a serial winner, or walk into a central role at a club trying to force its way back into the Premier League elite?
