Nico Elvedi's Impressive Debut for Leeds United

Nico Elvedi walked into English football with a win, a clean debut and a bruising battle he clearly relished.

Leeds United’s summer signing made his first appearance for the club in the Carabao Cup second-round victory over Nottingham Forest and came off the pitch sounding like a man who already feels at home.

“It was great. I'm proud of this team after that performance. We deserved this win, but it was a very strong performance from the home team as well. I'm happy we are going through to the next stage,” Elvedi said after the tie.

The Swiss defender did not dress up his own display, but he knew exactly what kind of test he had passed. Forest striker Chris Wood gave him the sort of physical introduction that usually comes with a warning label in English football.

“My performance was OK. I had a hard battle with Chris Wood which wasn't easy. I like it when the player I'm marking is strong, and I think I did well,” Elvedi reflected. “There are still things for me to improve but, for my first game of the season, it was OK.”

That duel set the tone for his night: direct balls, aerial contests, constant contact. Exactly the kind of game where a new centre-back either sinks or starts to build trust. Elvedi came through it talking like a player already demanding more from himself, not basking in a debut win.

Off the pitch, the transition might have been expected to sting more. Elvedi left Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer, walking away from an 11-year spell that shaped his entire professional career.

“It was hard because that club was my family. I had a lot of good memories there, but this is a new step in my career so I'm happy to be here,” he admitted.

That “here” already sounds like somewhere he wants to stay. He spoke warmly about the dressing room he has joined and the daily rhythm of his new life at Leeds.

“I'm so happy to be here. I have some great new team-mates, so it was very easy to come to this club. Every day is fun coming into the training sessions and playing on the pitch with these good players.”

One cup tie is only a starting point. But for Elvedi, it was a clean cut from his past in Germany and a first, firm stride into Leeds United’s future.
