Newcastle United Targets Youssouf Fofana Amid Transfer Window Rush
Newcastle United’s midfield rebuild has taken another twist, with AC Milan’s Youssouf Fofana emerging as the latest name on a growing shortlist.
With a little over two weeks left in the transfer window, Matthias Jaissle is still searching for the right blend of experience and depth after the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali ripped out the core of his engine room. The brief is clear: proven quality, ready now.
Newcastle have already sounded out Bayern Munich over Joao Palhinha and identified Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall as a possible option. Now there is a new avenue to explore.
Fofana pushed towards Milan exit
Italian journalist Matteo Moretto reported on Saturday that Newcastle have made an enquiry for Fofana, who has been told directly by Milan that he is no longer part of their plans.
“Fofana is on his way out, and he was informed of this in person,” Moretto said, via MilanNews, underlining just how blunt the message from the Serie A club has been.
At this stage, though, there is no deal close with anyone.
“I can assure you that there aren't any advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time,” Moretto added.
Newcastle are not alone. According to the same report, three clubs have already approached Milan to understand the 27‑year‑old’s situation.
“I can tell you that Nottingham have inquired, Newcastle have inquired, and Juventus have inquired,” said Moretto.
So the race has started. Nobody is sprinting yet.
Juventus push harder as price stays modest
If one club has nudged ahead, it is Juventus. While Newcastle’s interest remains at enquiry level, Juve are described as exploring the transfer more seriously than any of the other suitors.
“Fofana is certainly an option for Juventus, and the two clubs, Juve and Milan, have spoken and discussed possible situations and market developments,” Moretto reported.
The financial side only adds intrigue. Fofana joined Milan from Monaco in 2024 for around €20 million (£17.3 million) and is under contract until 2028. Despite that, most reports place Milan’s current asking price in the €15–20 million range (£13–17 million approximately).
That figure would make him significantly cheaper than some of Newcastle’s other midfield targets, including Palhinha, whose fee and wages sit in a different bracket entirely.
For a club needing multiple reinforcements, that kind of discount matters.
An open race as Newcastle weigh their options
For now, though, everything remains on the starting blocks. Milan are prepared to sell. Fofana has been told to look elsewhere. Clubs have called. Nobody has moved to the decisive stage.
“There aren't any advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time,” Moretto reiterated, stressing that the situation is still wide open.
Newcastle’s interest, then, is real but early. An enquiry, not an offer. A conversation, not a negotiation.
With Juventus already talking scenarios with Milan and Nottingham Forest also in the frame, the question is simple: do Newcastle step up, or do they let this one pass while they chase Palhinha, Bergvall, or another name entirely?
The clock on the window is ticking. The midfield gap is not going away.
