Newcastle United Targets La Masia's Guille Fernández
Newcastle’s youth drive shows no sign of slowing, and Barcelona’s La Masia is the latest talent pool in their sights.
Having already moved decisively for 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba to bolster midfield options, Newcastle United are pushing ahead with another wave of teenage recruitment while Matthias Jaissle continues to hunt for senior reinforcements before the window closes.
Reports on Wednesday linked the club with 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate, with a deal said to be close. Now, according to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, Newcastle are also on the verge of landing another 18-year-old midfielder – this time from Barcelona’s famed academy.
La Masia’s latest export?
Fernández reports that Barcelona are actively working on outgoing deals for several youngsters, but with a clear strategy: sell, without fully letting go.
“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” he explained. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”
Guille Fernández has yet to make his senior debut for Barcelona, but he has climbed steadily through the youth ranks and now features for the club’s reserve side. A Spain Under-19 international, he offers versatility across central midfield, comfortable in multiple roles through the middle.
Heading into the 2027-28 season, the 18-year-old carries a market valuation of €3 million. He is currently listed on Barcelona’s first-team roster, but the pathway to regular minutes in Xavi’s senior squad is steep and crowded, which has opened the door to a move abroad.
Barcelona’s stance is clear in Fernández’s reporting: they do not want a clean break. Any agreement with Newcastle is expected to include some form of buy-back clause or mechanism to retain influence over the player’s long-term future. Specific figures, potential fee structures, and the exact nature of the buy-back option have not been disclosed, and with other clubs also in the race, the final price could climb if a bidding battle develops.
Even so, the suggestion that Guille is now “close to Newcastle” underlines the direction of travel on Tyneside. The club are building a core of high-upside prospects, with La Masia graduates suddenly a recurring theme.
Youth rebuild – and a nod to experience
While Newcastle stockpile emerging midfielders, the recruitment team are not ignoring the here and now. Alongside the push for Fernández and Diabate, the club are also chasing a more established option capable of stepping straight into the starting XI.
The target? Man City’s Nico Gonzalez, another product of Barcelona’s academy and a midfielder seen as someone who can help replace the quality lost with the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
So the pattern is clear: teenagers for tomorrow, and a ready-made operator for today.
If Newcastle complete the move for Guille Fernández, it will mark another statement in an increasingly youth-focused rebuild – one that leans heavily on the pedigree of La Masia while trying to keep pace with the demands of the Premier League right now.
