Newcastle United in Advanced Talks for Nico Gonzalez Transfer
Newcastle United have moved into advanced talks with Manchester City over midfielder Nico Gonzalez, pushing hard to land an experienced anchor before the transfer window shuts.
This is not a luxury move. It is a rescue job.
A bruising summer has ripped the heart out of Newcastle’s midfield. Bruno Guimaraes is gone, sold to Arsenal. Sandro Tonali has followed him to north London, joining Tottenham. Anthony Gordon, the livewire England winger who so often stitched attacks together from the left, has taken a glamorous leap to Barcelona.
What remains is a structure with its beams exposed.
Into that gap steps Gonzalez, the player German head coach Matthias Jaissle has identified as his top target, according to The Athletic. The 24-year-old Spaniard only arrived at City in February 2025, a £52 million signing from Porto, and was supposed to be part of the next iteration of their midfield.
A La Masia graduate with Barcelona in his blood, Gonzalez looked ready to grow into that role last season. He featured 41 times in the 2025-26 campaign, taking his total to 59 games in a City shirt. He pressed, recycled possession, and knitted play in that familiar City rhythm.
Then Rodri came back.
The Spain international’s return from a cruciate ligament injury shoved Gonzalez down the pecking order and out of Pep Guardiola’s immediate plans. Any hope of a fresh start under Enzo Maresca has not materialised yet either. In the Community Shield against Arsenal, a 3-0 defeat, Gonzalez watched most of it from the bench and only appeared in the 78th minute.
The message was subtle but clear: his role is shrinking.
Even so, the midfielder publicly played down any sense of crisis earlier this month, insisting he was not panicking about his minutes. Now the landscape has shifted. Newcastle are closing in, and Gonzalez is on the verge of becoming their seventh signing of the window.
Newcastle have already gone young in midfield. Alagie Bamba, 20, and Sean Storr, 18, have arrived as long-term projects, raw pieces for Jaissle to mould. Gonzalez is different. He brings a body of work at the highest level, a player who knows the tempo, physicality and scrutiny of the Premier League.
He is not a star name on the level of Guimaraes yet, but he is battle-tested.
For Newcastle, who open their league campaign with a high-octane clash against Liverpool next Sunday, the timing is critical. Jaissle needs someone who can step straight into the storm, not just promise something for two years down the line.
On the other side of the equation, City also begin their title defence next Sunday, at home to Bournemouth. They will do it without Rodri, who has completed his move to Barcelona, and possibly without Gonzalez if Newcastle get their way in the coming days.
Two clubs, one midfield reshuffle, and a 24-year-old Spaniard at the centre of it.
