Newcastle United's Dilemma: What to Do with Nick Woltemade?

Newcastle United are already staring at an uncomfortable question they never expected to face this soon: what now with Nick Woltemade?

From explosive start to uncertain future

Woltemade arrived on Tyneside with all the noise and expectation that comes with a fee of that size. He embraced it early. Four goals in his first five Premier League games had St. James’ Park buzzing and convinced plenty that Newcastle had found their long-term No. 9.

Then the rush faded.

Over the course of the season, the Germany international levelled out. He finished his debut Premier League campaign with eight goals and three assists in 33 league appearances – respectable numbers, but not the return many imagined after that electric opening spell.

A change in the dugout has added another layer of uncertainty. New head coach Matthias Jaissle has tried to find the best version of Woltemade during preseason, using him both as a central striker and as a No. 10. The experiment has yet to catch fire. By all accounts, his summer has lacked the sharp, standout moments that might have shut down any transfer talk before it started.

Dortmund circle as deadline looms

Now comes the twist. According to Sky Sports Germany, Borussia Dortmund have already made preliminary contact with Newcastle over a move for Woltemade.

The German outlet reports that Dortmund have drawn up a small list of players who could leave before the deadline, with forward Fabio Silva among those who might be sacrificed. Only once that outgoing business is resolved do they plan to push ahead with any serious attempt to bring Woltemade back to Germany.

“According to our information, BVB has inquired (about Woltemade),” Sky Germany stated, noting that Dortmund made “some preliminary inquiries a few weeks ago about a potential transfer” for the Newcastle forward.

For now, the proposal on the table is not a permanent deal. Dortmund’s interest is understood to be focused on a loan, which would allow Newcastle to keep long-term control of a player they invested heavily in last summer, while giving Woltemade the chance to reset in familiar surroundings.

Newcastle’s dilemma

That structure changes the conversation. A loan to Dortmund could offer Woltemade regular minutes at a Champions League-level club, in a league he knows, with the possibility of restoring both form and market value.

But it also raises a blunt question inside St. James’ Park: can Newcastle afford to let a £69 million signing leave, even temporarily, after just one full season?

At this stage, there is no sign that Newcastle have accepted any proposal. There is no clear indication they have even decided whether they are open to loaning him out. Everything remains at an early stage, with Dortmund’s own squad situation – and specifically Silva’s unresolved future – standing as the first major hurdle before any deal can progress.

So the clock ticks, the window narrows, and a club-record signing sits at the heart of one of the most delicate calls of Newcastle’s summer. Do they double down on Woltemade under Jaissle, or let him rebuild himself in Dortmund’s colours for a year and hope he comes back as the player they thought they were buying?
