Newcastle United’s transfer priorities could not be clearer. They need full-backs. One, ideally two. And they need them fast.

The plan is to reinforce both positions before the new Premier League season kicks off. The reality is that the market, and the competition, are anything but straightforward.

Into that picture steps Joaquin Seys.
The Club Brugge left-back has been linked with Newcastle, with the Magpies now named among a high-profile pack tracking the 21-year-old Belgium international. According to The Sun, Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Benfica and Porto are all monitoring him.
The outlet reports: “And Seys is also capturing attention from the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle, as well as Portuguese giants Benfica and Porto.” Newcastle, then, are at the table – but they are far from alone.
Seys has quickly become one of Club Brugge’s standout young players. Last season he nailed down a regular place, making 25 league appearances and adding nine more in the Champions League. That consistency and composure on a bigger stage pushed him into Belgium’s World Cup squad this summer, where he featured in the quarterfinal defeat to eventual champion Spain.
That kind of rise, at that age, was always going to trigger a scramble.
Rivals move first
Right now, the sense is that others have stolen a march.
As things stand, Newcastle’s interest does not appear as advanced as that of some Premier League rivals. The Sun reports that Manchester United, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all formally checked on Seys’ availability after extensive scouting, while there is no mention of a similar enquiry from Newcastle.
“SunSport understands that Man Utd, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all submitted enquiries as to Seys’ availability following extensive scouting,” the report states.
So while Jaissle and the recruitment team weigh up their options, three domestic competitors have already knocked on Brugge’s door.
Price tag and Brugge’s stance
Any move for Seys would require serious money.
Club Brugge hold the defender on a contract that runs for another three years and, according to the same report, are under no pressure to sell. The Belgian side are said to be ready to demand around €35 million (£30m) for their rising star.

For a club already investing heavily in youth, that figure forces a strategic question at St. James’ Park: keep doubling down on potential, or pivot toward experience?
Newcastle’s dilemma at full-back
On paper, Seys would immediately strengthen Newcastle’s options at left-back. The club insist Lewis Hall is not for sale despite Manchester United’s interest, but depth remains an issue. On the opposite side, Tino Livramento is sidelined after suffering an injury on the verge of the World Cup, stripping Jaissle of another key full-back just as preparations for the new campaign ramp up.
That combination has cranked up the urgency. Newcastle need bodies. They also need the right profile.
At €35 million (£30 million), Seys would represent another sizeable outlay on a young player still at the early stages of his career. The talent is obvious. The ceiling looks high. But with a squad already dotted with emerging prospects, the debate inside and outside the club is sharpening: should Newcastle keep backing youth at that price point, or turn instead to a seasoned defender who can step in and deliver from day one, even as a rotation option?
