Newcastle Targets Botafogo Midfielder Alvaro Montoro
Newcastle’s youth-first recruitment drive has taken another step into South America, with highly rated Botafogo midfielder Alvaro Montoro emerging as the latest name on the club’s long-term radar.
The 19-year-old Argentine is the kind of profile that has defined Newcastle’s summer under Matthias Jaissle. The squad has already been bolstered by several players aged 21 or under, and the club’s recruitment team continues to hunt for prospects whose ceiling may matter more than their immediate impact on the first team.
This time, the trail leads to Rio.
A crowded queue for Montoro
According to Globo Esporte journalist Letícia Marques, Newcastle are one of seven clubs tracking Montoro. The competition is serious: AC Milan, Ajax, Sporting CP, Real Betis, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Atlanta United have all registered interest.
“The list of clubs interested in Montoro is long: Atlanta United, Betis, Milan, Newcastle, Ajax, Sporting, and Wolverhampton,” Marques reported. She added that there were signs of an offer in the region of €20 million, but talks stalled when Botafogo made their stance clear.
The Brazilian side is not selling. Not now.
Clubs from Europe, per the report, broadly valued Montoro at around €20 million (£17.3 million). Botafogo have already turned down a bid of that magnitude from another South American team and have shut the door on any exit during the current window. That decision underlines how highly they rate the teenager — and how strong their position has become.
Botafogo’s stance hardens
Earlier this year, the situation looked very different. Marques notes that Botafogo initially planned to cash in on Montoro and teammate Danilo in the first half of the year, with financial pressure pushing the club toward sales.
Then GDA arrived as a new investor.
Fresh backing changed the equation. With money no longer quite so tight, Botafogo can afford to resist bids and hold onto their key young talents, at least until the end of the Brazilian season. Montoro is central to that plan.
His contract situation only reinforces their resolve. Since arriving from Vélez Sarsfield last year, Montoro has delivered six goals and seven assists in 59 appearances, enough to convince Botafogo to move quickly and tie him down to a new deal reportedly running through December 2030. Every month that passes, his value — and the size of the negotiation — inches upward.
Europe can wait… but not forever
For Newcastle and the rest of the chasing pack, this is a delay, not a dead end.
Marques reports that Montoro wants to play in Europe, and his camp has been told that Botafogo could reopen talks over a transfer once the domestic campaign concludes. The player accepts the club’s decision to block a move for now, but the pathway is clear: finish the season, then revisit his future.
That timeline suits clubs who plan ahead rather than scramble late in a window. It also fits Newcastle’s current strategy. They have spent this summer laying foundations for the coming years, not just filling gaps for the next few months.
If they decide Montoro is a cornerstone worth fighting for, the real question becomes simple: how high are they prepared to go when the bidding starts above €20 million?
