Nathan Broadhead Ruled Out of Wales' Nations League Campaign

Nathan Broadhead has been ruled out of Wales’ upcoming Nations League campaign after the Wrexham forward suffered a thigh injury in training.

The 28-year-old had been named in Craig Bellamy’s 28-man squad for a demanding run of fixtures in League A against Portugal, Norway and a double-header with Denmark. Instead of flying out with Wales, he will now be in the treatment room – and he will not be available for Wrexham’s Championship clash with Southampton on Saturday (15:00 BST).

“Broady has strained his thigh in training, which is a shame because he was training well,” Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said. “That’s going to keep him out for the weekend but there’s nothing new from that.”

Asked directly whether the problem would also rule Broadhead out of the Wales camp, Parkinson did not hesitate: “Yes.”

It is another frustrating bump in the road for the 20-cap international. Broadhead started Wrexham’s first three Championship games of the season but has since dropped out of the matchday action, missing fixtures against Millwall, Swansea City, Burnley and West Ham United.

Upcoming Fixtures

For Wales, the timing is awkward. Bellamy’s side open this newly extended international window away to Portugal on 24 September, a stern test to launch a four-game stretch. They then head to Copenhagen to face Denmark, before returning to Cardiff where World Cup quarter-finalists Norway visit on 1 October. A home rematch with Denmark on 4 October closes a sequence that now goes ahead without one of Bellamy’s more versatile attacking options.
