Mykhailo Mudryk: Chelsea Reject Leeds Loan Bid, Premier League Future in Balance
Chelsea have knocked back an opening season-long loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the door to a deal is still very much open.
The first proposal from Elland Road landed well below Chelsea’s demands. Talks have continued, though, with the Ukraine international understood to be keen on the move as he looks for a fresh start and regular football.
Mudryk, now 25, has already agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge to rebuild his match fitness after a brutal spell on the sidelines. He spent 20 months out of the game following a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, a lay-off that stalled a career once tipped to explode in the Premier League.
His suspension ended in July. Since then, he has been folded back into Chelsea’s plans on their pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making a handful of appearances from the bench as he edges back towards full sharpness.
Premier League stay the priority
Despite interest from abroad, Mudryk has made it clear in recent conversations that his priority is to stay in the Premier League. That stance has complicated potential moves to Strasbourg – part of the BlueCo ownership group alongside Chelsea – and to clubs in Italy, who have also been monitoring his situation.
Leeds have surged to the front of the queue for one key reason: they are prepared to take Mudryk on loan without any purchase option. That suits Chelsea, who want to keep control of his long-term future while shifting his wages for the season and giving him the platform to play.
The Yorkshire club have already been busy this summer. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the attack, Tarik Muharemovic has joined from Sassuolo at centre-back, James Trafford has come in from Manchester City in goal, and Nico Elvedi has been signed from Borussia Monchengladbach to strengthen the defence. A move for Chelsea striker Liam Delap had also been explored earlier in the window, but that interest has cooled.
Brentford, Coventry and Strasbourg circle
Leeds are not alone in seeing an opportunity. Brentford were viewed as a serious contender for Mudryk, revisiting a long-standing admiration for the winger. The Bees tried to sign him months before Chelsea eventually secured him from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m and still rate him highly.
Their latest approach stalled on a key point: Brentford wanted an option to buy at the end of the loan. Chelsea refused, determined not to lock themselves into a cut-price exit for a player they invested heavily in.
Coventry City have also registered interest, sensing the chance to add top-level pace and flair to their wide areas. A switch to Strasbourg remains firmly on the table too, with Chelsea exploring the possibility of sending other players to the French side, including midfielder Dario Essugo, as part of a broader development pathway within the ownership group.
For now, though, all roads seem to lead back to Leeds. Chelsea do not completely rule out Mudryk staying put at Stamford Bridge, but the feeling around the club is that a season away is the likeliest outcome.
If Leeds can find the right number, they may end up offering the stage on which Mudryk finally restarts the Premier League career Chelsea thought they were buying.
