Mourinho Draws the Line on Yamal as Real Madrid Invests in Diomande
José Mourinho has barely unpacked his bags in Madrid, but the shots across the Clásico divide have already started.
The Portuguese coach, back in the Spanish capital and back at the centre of the storm, has made it brutally clear: there will be no place at Real Madrid for Barcelona’s teenage phenomenon, Yamal, no matter how bright his star burns.
Mourinho draws the line on Yamal
Yamal’s CV at 19 is absurd. Three La Liga titles already. A European Championship. A World Cup. Forty-two goal contributions in 45 games last season and a leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
None of it moves Mourinho.
Asked on El Chiringuito if he would like to bring the Barça prodigy to the Bernabéu, the Real Madrid boss cut through the noise.
“No. He’s a great player, without a doubt, a young player with unbelievable potential. To be a European and world champion at his age isn't normal, but we’ve got a top-class squad here; I wouldn't make room for anyone. These are my boys now. And my players are the best.”
It was classic Mourinho. Compliment with one hand, close the door with the other.
Diomande the €140m answer on the wing
That conviction doesn’t come from nowhere. It comes from a summer in which Real Madrid have spent like a club determined to reshape the era.
At the heart of it is Yan Diomande.
Signed from RB Leipzig for a fee rising to a record €140m, the Ivorian international has been earmarked for the right wing. The left remains Vinicius Junior’s territory after he turned down a huge offer from Arsenal to stay and lead Madrid’s attack.
Diomande is the bet. The statement. The reason Mourinho feels he can look at the most valuable teenager in world football and say: “No.”
Talking about his new wide man, Mourinho laid out the thinking.
“Finding a wide player [like Diomande] who is quick, aggressive, and can play on both flanks isn't easy, it's incredibly tough. On top of that, he's young, has room to develop, and has many years ahead of him at Real Madrid... I analyse the player's profile and what he can bring to my team, and on that basis, I said: 'Yes, I want him.'”
Madrid have chosen their future on the flanks. Diomande and Vinicius. No room for Yamal in white.
Barcelona’s new era, Yamal’s heavier crown
While Mourinho builds his new version of the Galácticos, Barcelona are undergoing a very different kind of transformation.
Hansi Flick has walked into a club mid-transition. Robert Lewandowski has gone, swapping Europe for the Chicago Fire. Ferran Torres has left too, heading to Paris Saint-Germain. Big names out, big responsibilities redistributed.
At the centre of it all: Yamal.
He is no longer just the wonderkid lighting up highlight reels. He is the man expected to carry more of Barça’s attacking weight, to turn his outrageous promise into weekly production in a side that has already learned how to win without always being spectacular.
Despite the rivalry and the sharpness of his stance on a transfer, Mourinho did allow himself a rare nod of appreciation towards what is happening at the Camp Nou.
“Yes, I do [like them],” he admitted when asked about Flick’s Barça. “They're doing a brilliant job. Flick, Deco, and obviously the players... I like what I'm seeing.”
Respect, but no concessions.
A new Clásico fault line
All of this sets up a La Liga season brimming with tension.
Barcelona, under Flick, come into 2026-27 as back-to-back domestic champions. Real Madrid, under Mourinho, are desperate to rip that crown from their hands and restore their own dominance.
On one side of the divide stands Yamal, already a champion of Europe and the world, now carrying the burden of a club in transition and the expectation that he will keep breaking records.
On the other, Diomande, a €140m signing dropped straight into the white-hot glare of the Bernabéu, tasked with proving that his coach was right to overlook the biggest teenage name in the sport.
The narrative almost writes itself. Every El Clásico will double as a referendum on Mourinho’s decision. Every Diomande sprint, every Yamal dribble, every goal or missed chance will feed the debate.
As the 2026-27 campaign kicks off, one question hangs over Spain’s two giants: will it be Diomande justifying his price and Mourinho’s faith, or Yamal forcing Madrid to live with the superstar they chose to leave on the other side of the divide?
