Nicknamed the Black Sea Storm, the club carries a fierce identity of its own. Seven league titles, six of them between 1976 and 1984, when Trabzon briefly broke Istanbul’s domestic stranglehold. A 38-year wait for another championship finally ended in 2022, sparking emotional scenes across the north-eastern city. They are one of only six teams ever to win the Turkish Super Lig, but they have always felt like outsiders crashing a closed party.
Now they have Salah.
As a free agent, his signing fee may be modest, but the wage packet will not be. With no transfer fee to pay, Trabzonspor have been able to funnel more of their budget directly into his salary, a rare opportunity for a club outside Europe’s financial elite to land a global superstar at the peak of his fame.
European nights on the horizon

Trabzonspor finished third last season, eight points behind champions Galatasaray, earning a route into the Europa League play-offs. Win there and they step into the new league phase. Lose, and they drop into the Conference League. Either way, continental football awaits.
Salah, with his 50 Champions League goals and a decade of experience at the sharp end of European competition, instantly becomes the reference point for those nights. The player who has walked out at the biggest arenas in the world will now be tasked with leading Trabzonspor into Papara Park’s biggest evenings in years.
He will not be alone. The current squad includes on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and two of Cape Verde’s World Cup standouts, Wagner Pina and Sidny Lopes Cabral. Daniel Sturridge and Nicolas Pepe, both former Premier League names, have worn the claret and sky blue before him. None arrived with this kind of glare.
This is different. This is seismic.
A modern transfer saga, played out online
Trabzonspor knew it too. On Tuesday night, the club’s social media accounts lit up. A video of the Pyramids alongside Papara Park hinted heavily at what was coming. Moments later, another post announced that “negotiations had begun” with Salah, while inviting fans to track his Wednesday flight into Istanbul.
They did exactly that.
As the private jet closed in, anticipation spiked. When Salah appeared in a video from on board – “Trabzon, are you ready? See you very soon,” he said – the city answered hours later at the airport.
Trabzonspor’s flight-tracking tease turned into a real-time reception. By the time the plane touched down, the roads were jammed, the airport perimeter a mass of bodies. When Salah finally emerged in club colours, the noise hit a new level. Flares lit the night sky. A new hero was in town, greeted like a movie star.
The biggest signing in club history
There is no debate about the scale of this move. For Trabzonspor, this is the biggest signing in their history.
