Mike Solan Set to Lead Offaly Footballers as Senior Boss

Mike Solan is poised to take the reins of the Offaly footballers after being put forward by the Faithful County’s management committee as their next senior boss.

The former Longford manager, who stepped away from that role earlier this month, will now go before the September county board meeting for ratification. If backed by delegates, he’ll be handed a three-year term to reshape an Offaly side entering another period of transition.

Solan won’t be coming in alone. His backroom ticket is already mapped out, with respected coach Joe Keane – who has previously worked with Mayo, Sligo and Longford – set to join him, along with Offaly great Nigel Dunne. Dunne’s stock in the county has rarely been higher after he steered the Faithful minors to a landmark Leinster title in 2025, ending a 35-year wait for provincial glory at that grade.

For Solan, it’s another step on a coaching journey that has steadily gathered weight. Before Longford, he managed the Mayo Under-21s and later linked up with Andy Moran’s management team in Leitrim, building a reputation as a modern, organised operator with strong dressing-room credentials.

He arrives as Offaly reset after the departure of joint-managers Mickey Harte and Declan Kelly last month. Harte, who came in alongside Kelly for the 2024 campaign, had toyed with the idea of staying on for another season. Kelly had already been in place from the previous year. In the end, both men walked away together, leaving a sizeable vacancy on the line.

Now the county’s future direction rests on that September vote – and on whether Solan can turn opportunity into a new era for the Faithful.
