Marseille Targets Arsenal's Meslier Before Transfer Deadline
Marseille have zeroed in on Illan Meslier’s uneasy start to life at Arsenal and are weighing up a late swoop for the goalkeeper before the transfer window shuts, according to reports in France.
The Frenchman only arrived in north London last month, walking away from Leeds United at the end of his contract to join the Premier League champions on a free. Arsenal handed the 26-year-old a two-year deal at the Emirates, keeping him under contract until June 2028 and billing him as back-up to David Raya.
On paper, it looked like a smart reset. In practice, his situation already looks complicated.
From Elland Road mainstay to the fringes
Meslier leaves behind a substantial body of work at Leeds. Across six seasons at Elland Road, he made 215 appearances in all competitions and played a central role in two promotions to the Premier League, in 2020 and again in 2025.
Then everything stalled.
Daniel Farke froze him out of the first-team picture last season, and Meslier has not played a single competitive minute since March 2025. Arsenal offered a fresh start, but the pattern has not shifted much so far.
During pre-season, he was restricted to substitute outings against Girona, Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund. When the serious stuff began, he slipped further down the pecking order: Kepa Arrizabalaga, not Meslier, took the goalkeeper spot on the bench for both the Community Shield and Friday night’s league win over Coventry.
For a 26-year-old who wants to be a No.1, that is a warning sign. Marseille have noticed.
Marseille sense opportunity
Foot Mercato report that Marseille have been “alerted” to Meslier’s “precarious situation” at Arsenal and are now considering a late move to bring him back to Ligue 1.
The French club are actively searching for reinforcements in goal while the market remains open. Jeffrey de Lange is the established first choice under Bruno Genesio, but behind him the depth is thin. De Lange is currently the only senior goalkeeper in the squad.
Jelle Van Neck and Theo Vermot are the other keepers on the books, yet neither has made a first-team appearance for the Ligue 1 side. For a club with Marseille’s ambitions and expectations, that is a risk.
Meslier has been identified as one of their “top targets” to address the issue. His lack of recent minutes has not put them off; the report states Marseille’s hierarchy are “very impressed” by his profile and long-term potential.
There is a catch. Before they can move, Marseille may have to cut their squad and trim the wage bill. Only then, it is claimed, will they be in a position to table a “concrete offer” to Arsenal.
Proud words, uncertain role
Meslier spoke with clear pride when he signed for Arsenal, stressing the scale of the club and his hunger to win.
“I’m extremely happy,” he told the club’s official website after completing the move from Leeds. “It’s a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England.
“I’m very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I’ve got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.”
His challenge now is simple but brutal: force his way past both Raya and Arrizabalaga, or accept that his route to regular football may lie elsewhere.
Arsenal’s reshaped squad
Meslier’s arrival is only one part of a busy summer at the Emirates. Arsenal have reinforced their title-winning squad with Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa, arriving from Newcastle, Club Brugge and Aston Villa respectively.
They have also triggered a £35 million option to sign Piero Hincapie on a permanent deal after his initial loan from Bayer Leverkusen, underlining Mikel Arteta’s determination to deepen his defensive options.
There have been exits too. Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, Christian Norgaard and Karl Hein have all been allowed to leave the English champions as the squad evolves again around its core.
Meslier sits at the crossroads of that rebuild. Arsenal see him as a high-level reserve. Marseille see him as a solution.
If the French club can clear the space and push a deal over the line before the window closes, the goalkeeper who only just walked through the doors at London Colney could already be heading back across the Channel.
