Manchester United U19s Dominate Sabah FK 5–0 in Youth League
Manchester United’s youngsters launched their UEFA Youth League campaign in ruthless fashion, dismantling Sabah FK 5–0 at Leigh Sports Village in an afternoon that felt like a statement rather than a simple group opener.
With the competition mirroring the first team’s Champions League schedule in the group phase, United’s U21s boss stepped in to lead a makeshift U19s side. On this evidence, the blend worked.
Lightning start
Any early nerves vanished almost instantly. Inside two minutes, United were in front. Jim Thwaites whipped in a teasing free-kick from wide on the right, and Amir Ibragimov darted to the near post to turn it home. One delivery, one sharp run, one touch. 1–0 and Sabah were already scrambling.
The tone was set. JJ Gabriel, buzzing around the edge of the box, almost doubled the lead moments later. He unleashed a fierce drive from distance, forcing the Sabah goalkeeper into a flying save to tip the ball over the bar.
Sabah rarely escaped their own half. When they did, it came through the tireless running of Shahin Ibrahimov, who tried to burst clear on the counter. Each time, though, he ran into a red wall, isolated and outnumbered.
The pressure finally told again in the 16th minute. Bendito Mantato’s cross skidded right across the penalty area, evading everyone in blue but not Jacob Watson. Arriving on his weaker right foot, the defender met it sweetly and drilled in United’s second.
There was a brief setback when Godwill Kukonki, making his first start of the season, rolled his ankle and had to come off on 20 minutes, with Rafe McCormack sent on in his place. The reshuffle did nothing to disrupt United’s rhythm.
Right on the stroke of half-time, they struck again. Junior Brown’s effort in a crowded box was blocked, the ball broke loose, and Gabriel reacted quickest. He pounced, kept his head, and finished to make it 3–0 just before the whistle. Sabah trudged off having barely laid a glove on United.
Gabriel takes over
United came out after the break intent on turning dominance into a rout. Brown almost added the fourth with a lovely, curling effort after cutting inside from the left, only to be denied by a stunning save that clawed the ball away from the top corner.
The goals briefly dried up, but not the chances. United camped in Sabah’s half, moving the ball, probing, shooting from all angles. The visitors simply could not get out.
Eventually, the resistance snapped. With the game drifting into its closing stages, Gabriel struck again. Inside the box, he coolly sidestepped his marker and passed the ball into the far right corner, a finish that matched the control United had shown all afternoon.
Two goals for Gabriel, but he was not finished. Thwaites, already with one assist from a dead ball, produced the pass of the match. From deep, he threaded a superb through ball straight between the Sabah defenders, sending Gabriel clear. One touch to steady himself, another to slide it past the keeper. Hat-trick complete. 5–0, and United were rampant.
By the end, the numbers were staggering. United racked up 44 attempts on goal. Sabah failed to register a single effort against Cameron Byrne-Hughes.
