Manchester United Set for Transfer Boost with Kambwala Move to Como

Manchester United are set for an unexpected cash injection this month, with former defender Willy Kambwala closing in on a move from Villarreal to Italian side Como.

The 21-year-old, who left Old Trafford in 2024, is in advanced talks over a switch to Serie A newcomers Como, with the deal expected to trigger a “sizeable” sell-on clause United inserted when they sold him to Villarreal.

Sell-on foresight pays off

United allowed Kambwala to join Villarreal two years ago after he had made his senior debut at 19, agreeing a package worth €5.5million (£4.7m) plus up to €6m (£5.14m) in add-ons. Crucially, the deal also contained a buy-back option, matching rights for three years and that significant sell-on clause now coming into play.

Club sources described the clause as “sizeable” at the time, though Villarreal are only expected to receive a modest fee from Como, which will naturally limit United’s share. Even so, it represents another example of the club’s increasingly aggressive approach to protecting value in outgoing deals.

Como are understood to be leading the race ahead of Osasuna, with the Italian club poised to beat the Spanish side to Kambwala’s signature.

New transfer policy under Ineos

United had occasionally used sell-on and buy-back clauses before Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment, but those mechanisms have effectively become standard since Ineos took charge of football operations. They are now a central part of negotiations when academy products and fringe players move on.

Recent deals underline that shift.

  • Tyler Fredricson’s move to Lausanne-Sport included a “high percentage” sell-on clause and a buy-back option.
  • Radek Vitek’s transfer to Middlesbrough carried similar protections: United inserted a buy-back clause, matching rights and a sell-on percentage of up to 35 per cent to cash in on any future sale.
  • The club went even stronger with Ethan Williams’ switch to Peterborough last week, inserting a 50 per cent sell-on clause alongside buy-back and matching rights.
  • Ethan Ennis’ permanent move to Stockport County earlier this week followed the same template, with United again keeping a 50 per cent sell-on, plus buy-back and matching rights.

Piece by piece, United are building a web of future income streams around their departing youngsters. Kambwala’s impending move to Como is simply the latest test of that strategy.

Carrick eyes late-window opportunities

While the Kambwala windfall will not transform United’s budget on its own, every extra pound matters in the final days of the window. The club still hope to strengthen before the deadline, with Michael Carrick clear about the intention.

"I just think we're looking to strengthen the squad," he said. "We're certainly working towards that, making the most of the situation that we have and trying to improve things and trying to move forward.

"You know, I said the same thing to you last time. So, yeah, certainly trying to make the most of the opportunities to finish the window stronger than we went into it. And I think we're a good way to doing that, so far."

If United do land late reinforcements, a young defender who left Old Trafford two years ago may quietly have helped pay for the next phase of the rebuild.
