Manchester United Target David Raum in Left-Back Search
Manchester United have turned their attention to RB Leipzig defender David Raum as the club scramble for a late-window solution at left-back, with Lewis Hall effectively off the table.
United have already thrown close to £150m at their midfield rebuild this summer, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. The spine looks stronger. The flanks do not.
Left-back remains a glaring problem. Luke Shaw’s recurring injury issues mean Erik ten Hag cannot build a season around him, and with Hall now out of reach at Newcastle United despite reported “buy-in” from the player, United are back in the market and running out of days.
Raum, 28, has emerged as a serious option. According to BILD, relayed by Sport Witness, the Germany international is on United’s left-back shortlist after a productive Bundesliga campaign in which he registered 10 goal contributions. He is also entering the final year of his contract, a detail that could shape the entire deal.
The player himself has already admitted the situation is active.
“I’m now heading into the final year of my contract,” Raum said earlier this week. “I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”
Leipzig, though, face a familiar modern dilemma: cash in now or risk losing value later. The German side are understood to be seeking around €40m for Raum, but accept they may have to settle for less given his contract position.
That is where United’s hesitation kicks in. The club are described as “dithering” over whether to commit what is viewed internally as a relatively large fee for a player who is closer to his peak years than the developmental profile they have increasingly targeted. The alternative is to move for a younger full-back with more resale value and room to grow — but that route carries its own risk in the short term.
Time, not just money, is the pressure point. The window is closing fast, and United cannot afford to enter the heart of the season one Shaw injury away from another defensive reshuffle.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano insists the club are fully engaged in trying to solve it.
“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” he said on his YouTube channel. “So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back.”
Romano also poured cold water on any prospect of a blockbuster move for Alejandro Balde, revealing that United had spoken with Jorge Mendes but quickly walked away from the numbers involved.
“They had a call with Jorge Mendes one week ago, but the deal is too expensive. Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now,” he explained.
Instead, the club are expected to pursue what Romano framed as a more pragmatic solution — a dependable, experienced left-back rather than a headline-grabbing star.
“You remember when Man Utd signed Sergio Reguilon from I think it was Tottenham on loan, something similar,” he said. “Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile.
“So Manchester United are exploring this kind of options. So left-back is expected to be an area where Man Utd want to improve before the deadline. I expect them to sign there.”
Raum fits that description neatly: capped by Germany, proven in the Bundesliga, dangerous going forward, and immediately ready to compete. The question now is whether United are prepared to pay Leipzig’s price for a near-guarantee — or gamble again on potential with the clock ticking.
