Manchester United Target Baleba for Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United are pushing hard to make Brighton midfielder Baleba the next pillar of their summer rebuild, with talks between the clubs described as positive and progressing.
United have tabled an opening offer worth around £60 million (€70m) plus a further £5m in potential add-ons, according to The Athletic. Brighton, typically tough negotiators, believe that figure still falls short of their valuation of the 22-year-old, but the tone of negotiations remains constructive rather than confrontational.
United want this done. Quickly.
Midfield overhaul in full swing
Reinforcing the middle of the pitch has driven United’s transfer strategy all summer. The club have already brought in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, reshaping the options in front of the back line and around the captain, Bruno Fernandes.
A move for Atalanta’s Ederson had been agreed earlier in the window, only for United to walk away after concerns emerged over the Brazilian’s knee. They then chased Elliot Anderson, only to see the England international choose the blue half of Manchester and sign for rivals Manchester City.
Those setbacks, coupled with injuries, have sharpened the urgency. Manuel Ugarte picked up an injury while on World Cup duty with Uruguay, and Mason Mount missed the final two games of pre-season. The result: United’s need for another high-level midfielder has gone from important to essential.
That is where Baleba comes in.
Brighton’s rising asset
Baleba arrived at Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023 and has grown into a key figure on the south coast. He has already amassed 112 appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls, an impressive tally for a player still only 22.
Last season he featured 35 times for Brighton, his rhythm interrupted only briefly by his involvement with Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations. His blend of energy, physicality and presence in midfield has made him one of Brighton’s most coveted assets and a natural target for a club trying to inject fresh legs and intensity into the engine room.
Brighton know his value. United know his fit.
Carrick’s evolving midfield picture
If United can close the deal, Baleba will drop straight into a fiercely competitive group in Michael Carrick’s squad. He would be vying for minutes alongside Tielemans, Santos, Kobbie Mainoo and Fernandes, with the profile to operate both as a ball-winner and as a carrier who can break lines.
For Carrick, a former elite midfielder himself, the balance of his central options is starting to look very different from the one he inherited. Baleba’s arrival would push that evolution another step, offering legs and aggression to complement the craft of Fernandes and the promise of Mainoo.
Race against the clock
Dialogue between United and Brighton remains active and positive as both sides work to bridge the final gap in valuation. With pre-season wrapped up and competitive fixtures closing in, United are keen to move from talks to signatures and get the Cameroonian integrated into Carrick’s plans as soon as possible.
All parties are described as confident that an agreement will be reached. If that optimism holds, Baleba’s next appearance in red may not be for Cameroon or Brighton, but under the floodlights at Old Trafford.
