Manchester United Target Alejandro Balde as Left-Back

Manchester United have turned their attention to Barcelona full-back Alejandro Balde as they search for their next left-back, with the Spaniard emerging on their shortlist after the completion of the Baleba deal.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that United have made contact with Balde’s camp in recent days to explore whether a move away from Barcelona could be on the table and on what terms. The conversations are described as exploratory, aimed at understanding if an exit is realistic rather than signalling an imminent bid.

Balde’s situation at the La Liga champions has shifted over the past year. After an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign, his status as the long-term first-choice on the left has come under pressure. Hansi Flick leaned heavily on João Cancelo in the second half of last season, and the Portuguese defender has now returned to the club on a permanent basis.

That decision places Balde in a difficult spot. With Cancelo back and trusted by Flick, the 20-year-old faces the prospect of starting the new season as second choice, a step back for a player once seen as a pillar of Barcelona’s future.

The uncertainty has inevitably drawn attention from abroad. United, still rebuilding their defensive core and keen to secure a dynamic option on the left, have moved quickly to test the waters.

For now, though, there is a major obstacle: Balde himself. Romano notes that the defender remains happy at Barcelona and content at Spotify Camp Nou, despite the threat of reduced minutes.

So United have made their first move, Barcelona are listening only at the right price, and Balde is publicly at ease where he is. Something will have to give before this story truly catches fire.
