Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70m
Manchester United have finally landed Carlos Baleba, completing a deal with Brighton that could rise to £70m and underlining just how seriously the club is rebuilding its midfield.
The 22-year-old Cameroon international becomes United’s third midfield arrival of the summer, following Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. With Baleba’s £65m fee, plus £5m in potential add-ons and a sell-on clause, United’s outlay on midfielders in this window alone climbs to around £148m.
Baleba has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, a clear statement that United see him as a long-term pillar of the side rather than a short-term fix.
“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” Baleba said after the deal was confirmed. “Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.
“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. His experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.
“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”
A year in the making
United’s pursuit of Baleba is not some late-window scramble. The club moved for him last summer but backed away when Brighton made it clear he was going nowhere. The stance on the south coast softened this time; United’s interest did not.
Baleba did not hit his absolute peak last season, yet United were unmoved. They reignited talks a week ago and accelerated the move, convinced that his ceiling remains high and his profile exactly what their midfield needs.
The context matters. Casemiro has left. Manuel Ugarte, signed to bring bite and balance, has suffered a serious knee injury. United’s engine room, once built around experience and steel, is being rapidly retooled with younger legs and fresher ideas.
Santos, Tielemans, now Baleba. Different styles, same message: United are rebuilding the core of their team.
‘Elite midfielder’ backing
Inside the club, the belief in Baleba is strong and unambiguous.
“Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further,” said United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox. “He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad.
“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”
Brighton lose another asset, United gain a player they have tracked and waited for. The fee is heavy, the expectation even heavier.
Now it is over to Baleba, Carrick and a reshaped United midfield to prove that this bold, expensive rebuild can turn promise into power.
