On Thursday night, the wait ends, as Manchester United open their European campaign against Azerbaijani underdogs Sabah FK – a fixture they are expected to dominate, but one that will quietly test the depth and direction of Michael Carrick’s new era.
Carrick, the former midfield metronome now steering the club from the dugout, earned this return to Europe the hard way. A third-placed finish in last season’s Premier League secured United’s ticket back to the top table and convinced the hierarchy to remove any doubt about his future by handing him the job on a permanent basis. Now comes the real scrutiny: delivering when the anthem plays.
Fitness boosts and lingering doubts
United’s preparations have brought a few encouraging sights. Mason Mount, who has been sidelined, was back in full training ahead of the tie and is edging towards a return that Carrick badly needs in midfield. Amad Diallo is expected to be out until October with an ankle injury, and new signing Carlos Baleba, brought in from Brighton and Hove Albion, is on a similar recovery timeline. Manuel Ugarte is also sidelined, trimming Carrick’s options in the centre of the pitch.
Even so, the core of United’s XI feels relatively straightforward to piece together.
Selection puzzles across the back line
Senne Lammens is set to continue in goal, offering a calm presence behind a defence that still feels in transition. At right-back, Carrick must choose between Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, a battle that may not be restricted to just one flank.

That pairing is likely to continue, at least from the first whistle. Tielemans brings range of passing and control, Mainoo brings energy and intelligence. Behind them, Andrey Santos – the £48m recruit from Chelsea – waits impatiently for a bigger role. This kind of fixture, at home against perceived minnows, might be his best chance to stake a serious claim for regular starts.
Big calls in the final third
Higher up the pitch, the structure is familiar. Bruno Fernandes will operate as the central creator, the man expected to dictate tempo and carve open Sabah’s back line. To his right, Bryan Mbeumo is in line to start, offering direct running and a constant threat cutting inside.
The real intrigue lies on the left and through the middle. If Sesko is deemed ready to lead the line, Marcus Rashford may finally get a rest. That would allow Matheus Cunha, who has often operated centrally, to shift out to the left flank.
