Manchester United Rejects Galatasaray's Audacious Bid for Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United have no intention of letting their captain go – no matter how bold the offer.

Galatasaray have tested United’s resolve with what has been described as an “audacious approach” for Bruno Fernandes, but the response from Old Trafford is set to be swift and uncompromising: not for sale.

Fernandes, now 31, is heading into the final 12 months of the three‑year contract he signed in 2024, though United hold an option to extend it by a further season. On paper, that might tempt opportunistic bidders. In reality, United are planning their season with him at the heart of it.

There is a wrinkle. The Portugal international’s deal includes a £56million release clause, but it can only be activated by clubs outside England. That technicality has inevitably drawn attention from abroad and kept his name in the rumour mill.

Galatasaray have long been circling. Back in May, The Mirror described Fernandes as a “dream target” for the Istanbul giants, who have shown little fear when it comes to big spending, bringing in headline names such as Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sane in recent windows.

Now, according to The Independent, the Turkish champions are preparing a substantial financial package to tempt Fernandes and force United to think. The answer, though, is expected to be the same as it has been all summer. United’s stance is unchanged: their captain is central to the project under Michael Carrick and will not be allowed to leave.

The timing only hardens that position. The summer window is moving into its final weeks, the Premier League season kicks off on Friday, and United are preparing for a return to the Champions League. This is not the moment to rip out the dressing room’s main reference point.

Fernandes remains a key figure for Carrick, both on the pitch and in the dressing room, and is expected to play a major role in United’s European campaign as they rejoin the elite for the first time since 2024.

For now, there are no concrete plans to hand him a fresh deal before the new season starts, but that could change once the campaign settles and the club reassesses its priorities. United know the value of stability around their captain; Fernandes knows the weight of the shirt he wears.

Speaking last month, he underlined exactly that sense of responsibility.

“Playing for Manchester United is always a special moment for everyone. At the same time, it brings a lot of responsibility with it,” he said. “But I don't think anyone comes to Manchester United thinking that we won't have the responsibility to win again, to be at the top of the Premier League, at the top of European football, because the club's history brings that responsibility.

“Regardless of the most recent years, they were not at the level that the club was used to. I think everyone always believes that we can be the ones who are going to do this, the ones who are going to turn the page, the ones who are going to make it possible for United to fight on all fronts. And I think that has to be special for us players, to realise that we can be the main, let's say, protagonists of this change of history for United to win again.”

Those are not the words of a man agitating for the exit. They sound more like a captain bracing himself for another push.

United finished third in the Premier League last season, their best placing since 2022/23, and Carrick will try to turn that step forward into something more convincing as 2026/27 begins. The club’s return to the Champions League raises the stakes, and Fernandes sits at the centre of that ambition.

The campaign starts away at Hull City on Saturday, August 22, with a 12:30pm kick-off. Galatasaray may keep calling, and the release clause may continue to hover in the background, but for now the picture is clear: United intend to chase trophies with Bruno Fernandes leading them, not cash in on him.
