Manchester United Pulls Out of Éderson Transfer Deal
Manchester United have dramatically walked away from a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Éderson, just weeks after the transfer had been described as “100 per cent confirmed”.
The Brazilian was expected to become United’s first signing of the summer, a €45m package all but wrapped up according to Fabrizio Romano at the start of June. Documents were said to be completed, personal terms agreed since May, and only a signature later in the window left to formalise the move.
It was teed up as a statement addition for a club riding the momentum of a resurgent second half of the season under Michael Carrick, a run that carried them to third place and back into the Champions League. Extra prize money, restored prestige, a clear plan in midfield – the pieces seemed to fit.
Then the brakes went on.
From “100% confirmed” to “deal OFF”
Romano, who had initially called it as done, returned to X with a very different update: the transfer is now “OFF and considered as collapsed” after Manchester United informed Atalanta of their decision to pull out. The change, he reported, stems from concerns on United’s side over Éderson’s fitness and a subsequent shift in their plans.
Atalanta, for their part, are adamant there is no issue. The Italian club believe Éderson is “100% fit” and are ready to welcome him back into Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad as a key part of their season. From being on the brink of a Premier League move, the 24-year-old now slots straight back into Bergamo’s plans.
The collapse is striking given how advanced the negotiations had been. Romano had previously written that all documents between United and Atalanta were completed for the €45m deal, with the player “set to sign later on this summer”. He even labelled Éderson “First signing: 100% confirmed.”
Now, that first signing no longer exists.
Éderson left waiting
Éderson himself had spoken cautiously but positively about the proposed move while on World Cup duty, aware of how close he was to a career-changing transfer yet determined to stay in the moment.
“I have to wait. Now I have to enjoy this moment, then we will see,” he told reporters. “Certainly, everything is almost done, but now I have to enjoy this moment. This is a wonderful experience and you have to enjoy the most.”
What looked like a formality has turned into a full reset. The midfielder, who had been preparing for life in England, must now recalibrate and refocus on Atalanta, at least in the short term.
A “bargain” that never landed
The decision also cuts across the views of some within the game who felt United were getting serious value. Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro, speaking last month, believed the £38m fee represented a smart piece of business in a market where elite midfielders command eye-watering sums.
“I think Éderson as well, £38 million I believe,” he said, comparing the Brazilian to other names on United’s radar. “When you think, Man Utd are linked with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Tchouameni from Real Madrid, they’re all obviously world-class players, but they are so expensive comparatively.
“I think £38 million for Éderson is a bit of a bargain, really, in today’s market, right?”
Sandro praised Éderson’s profile, highlighting the blend of physicality and quality that many clubs seek in a modern central midfielder.
“I know that he’s a top midfielder. He went to Brazil a few times with the national team. I saw a couple of videos, whilst I didn’t follow him game by game, I know that he’s strong. He has that physical ability to play in the Premier League and I know that a few other clubs wanted to sign him from the Premier League as well.”
Those attributes had seemingly convinced United that he was the right fit to reinforce a midfield tasked with competing on multiple fronts next season. Now they will look elsewhere.
United’s next move
For Manchester United, this is a sharp pivot at a delicate stage of the window. The club had aligned their early business around a player they believed would add power, legs and presence in the middle of the pitch as they return to the Champions League under Carrick.
Walking away suggests a hard line on medical and fitness standards, but it also leaves a hole in their recruitment plan. The money is still there. The need in midfield remains. The shortlist, one way or another, will be tested again.
For Éderson, the story is different. A Premier League move that was “100% confirmed” has vanished. Atalanta still trust his body and his talent. The next chapter of his career, once seemingly written in red, will now be played out in black and blue – at least until the market asks the question again.
