Manchester United's Next Steps for Harry Amass and JJ Gabriel
Manchester United’s academy conveyor belt rolled on in ruthless style on Monday night – and it has left Michael Carrick with some big decisions to make.
A 5-0 demolition of Ipswich Town in Premier League 2 at Leigh Sports Village showcased two very different stages of youth development at the club: 19-year-old left-back Harry Amass, on the brink of senior football, and 15-year-old forward JJ Gabriel, already announcing himself with a statement performance.
Amass impresses – but could be heading out
Carrick has been pleased with Amass all summer. The teenager has spent pre-season as understudy to Luke Shaw, stepping into sessions and games with a calmness that has not gone unnoticed.
His trajectory looked clear last year. A strong loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday underlined his potential, only for a mid-season switch to Norwich City to be derailed by injury in the second half of the campaign. The momentum stalled, but the reputation didn’t.
United have not brought in a new left-back this summer, which might have opened a path for Amass to stay and compete. Yet Carrick admitted that, even in that context, a move before Tuesday’s deadline is firmly on the table – and not a permanent one.
Despite the lack of reinforcements in his position, a loan is now viewed as more likely than a sale, with United keen to protect both his value and his development.
“It comes to this stage [of the window], and there's always a little bit where, and this is not just Harry by the way, this is just the stage of the window and putting squads together and dynamics of changes, and younger players and loans and not loans, and all sorts of different scenarios.
“I think we always try to do the best for each individual player, as well as keeping the group strong. I've been really pleased with Harry. I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens. But he played really well the other night.”
The message is clear: United like him, they trust him, but they also know he needs games. The next 24 hours will tell whether those minutes come at Old Trafford or elsewhere.
JJ Gabriel lights it up at 15
If Amass represents the near future, JJ Gabriel is the glimpse of what might be coming a little further down the line – and he is arriving fast.
On his competitive debut for the U21s, the 15-year-old produced the kind of performance that makes coaches and supporters sit up. One spectacular goal. Two assists. Constant menace. It wasn’t just the numbers; it was the authority with which he played at a level well above his age group.
Carrick, watching on from the stands, left Leigh Sports Village delighted with what he had seen from the whole group, but Gabriel inevitably drew attention.
“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” said Carrick. “Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see that the quality. I really enjoyed the game.
“Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good. So, really encouraged by that.
“JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development.”
United have already integrated Gabriel into first-team training sessions, carefully exposing him to the demands of senior football while monitoring how his body copes with each jump. At 15, the emphasis remains on development rather than expectation, but the ceiling is obvious.
For Carrick, the Ipswich thrashing was more than just a big scoreline in Premier League 2. It was a reminder that, even as the club wrestles with transfer deadlines and squad gaps, the academy continues to deliver options – some ready to step out on loan, others just beginning to test their limits.
Amass might soon be learning his trade away from Manchester. Gabriel is only just starting to write his story. How quickly those two paths cross again at first-team level could say a lot about where United are heading.
