Manchester United to Launch New Midfield Against Hull

Manchester United begin their Premier League campaign at Hull today with Michael Carrick poised to throw two new signings straight into the heat of competition.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are both in line for their first competitive appearances for the club, with the latter expected to walk straight into the starting XI at the MKM Stadium.

Santos, a £50million arrival from Chelsea, barely missed a beat in pre-season. Carrick used him in all six friendlies, a clear sign of trust and a strong hint that the Brazilian will anchor United’s midfield this afternoon. He has rhythm, he has minutes, and he has the shirt to lose.

Tielemans’ route has been different, but no less significant. The Belgian joined later after an extended post-World Cup break following his country’s run to the quarter-finals. Any questions over his sharpness eased when he completed 90 minutes against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Poland. That outing pushed him to the required level just in time.

Carrick, preparing for his first full season as permanent United head coach, is leaning towards continuity in the centre of the pitch. He could stick with the same trio that started the 4-2 defeat to Milan: Santos deeper, Tielemans alongside, and captain Bruno Fernandes operating in his favoured No10 role, where he dictates tempo and chaos in equal measure.

The real uncertainty lies behind them.

At centre-back, Lisandro Martinez’s lack of match sharpness has opened the door for youth. Ayden Heaven is pushing hard to partner Harry Maguire, and may edge out Leny Yoro for the role alongside the former Hull defender. It would be a bold call from Carrick, but his pre-season selections suggest he is not afraid of one.

Senne Lammens is set to start in goal, with Luke Shaw locked in at left-back. On the opposite flank, the battle is tighter. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are contesting the right-back spot, and the final decision is expected to go down to the wire, shaped by how aggressively Carrick wants his full-backs to attack Hull’s wide areas.

Further forward, one of the more intriguing storylines of United’s summer has been Patrick Dorgu. Either side of a cruel injury against Arsenal in January, he has been reshaped into a left winger. The switch has worked so well that it now causes a headache.

Matheus Cunha does his best work from that same left channel, drifting in, linking play, and driving at defenders. Only one can truly own that space.

For now, circumstances might decide it. With Benjamin Sesko not yet ready to start after three months out injured, Cunha is expected to deputise again as a central striker. That frees up the left flank, allowing Dorgu to continue his reinvention higher up the pitch.

Bryan Mbeumo, who has been shuffled around the frontline all summer, is likely to move back out to the right-hand side, giving United a fluid, hard-running front three built around movement rather than a traditional No9.

New faces, new roles, and a head coach stepping into his first full campaign. Hull away is rarely a gentle opener. Carrick is betting that this reshaped United are ready to live with the intensity from day one.
