Manchester United Explore Signing Brazil Striker Igor Thiago
Manchester United’s summer rebuild has a clear running order. A third midfielder. Cover at left-back. Then, and only then, a new face at centre-forward if the dominoes fall their way.
Even so, the club have already picked up the phone to one of the Premier League’s most prolific finishers.
Igor Thiago, fresh from a 22-goal league season and 25 in all competitions for Brentford, has been the subject of an exploratory call from United, according to respected reporter Ben Jacobs. The Brazil international, who broke into the national team in 2026, has been discussed internally at Old Trafford as a striker who is “Premier League ready”.
Striker search behind other priorities
United’s hierarchy have not disguised their transfer blueprint. The midfield rebuild remains the headline act, with a third new signing in that area viewed as essential rather than optional. Behind that, a new left-back is firmly on the agenda, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall identified as the leading target.
Wide on the left, the picture is more conditional. A move for a new winger depends on whether the club can find an exit route for Marcus Rashford. The same logic applies up front: a striker is wanted, but only if Joshua Zirkzee departs.
United flirted briefly with the idea of bringing Danny Welbeck back before he chose Chelsea. Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have both been linked, names that fit the “proven Premier League” brief.
Yet Thiago’s numbers refuse to be ignored.
Thiago on the radar – but hard to prise away
Speaking to The United Stand, Jacobs confirmed that Thiago has moved beyond the stage of idle chatter.
“Igor Thiago has been discussed, somebody that’s Premier League ready,” he said, describing the contact so far as “more of an internal conversation and a normal player call to understand his situation.”
United, in other words, have done what big clubs do when they’re circling a serious target: they’ve called the player’s camp to gauge the lay of the land.
The response? Any move will be “incredibly difficult” this summer. Brentford, armed with a striker who has just delivered an outstanding campaign, hold a strong hand. Thiago’s emergence as a Brazil international only strengthens their position, even if he struggled to replicate his club form on the World Cup stage when given his chances.
For United, that complexity explains the order of business. Jacobs underlined that the club’s immediate focus remains on midfield and left-back, with the striker situation tethered tightly to Zirkzee’s future.
So Thiago’s name is on the list. A call has been made. But until United resolve their priorities and Zirkzee’s fate, the Brazil forward sits in the same place as much of their summer planning: on the brink of something, waiting for the first big move to land.
