Manchester United Reshapes Goalkeeping Ranks with Vítek and Bayindir Moves

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department is being ripped up and rebuilt, and two more names are heading for the exit.

Radek Vítek is set to join Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £14 million, while fellow goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is close to sealing a season-long loan to Celta Vigo.

This is not a minor tweak. It is a clear reset.

New-look Boro, new stage for Vítek

Michael Carrick is reshaping his Middlesbrough squad after last season’s painful Championship playoff final defeat, and Vítek is poised to become a key part of that rebuild.

The 22-year-old Czech keeper arrives on Teesside on the back of an impressive campaign with Bristol City, where he finally showed why United took him from Sigma Olomouc in 2020. Earlier, quieter spells at Accrington and Blau-Weiss Linz helped him learn the trade. Ashton Gate is where he grew into it.

Now, he steps into a club desperate to turn playoff frustration into promotion.

United have not walked away lightly. The deal with Boro includes matching rights and a buy-back option, underlining how highly they still rate Vítek’s potential. The package, understood to be worth up to £14m with bonuses, also carries a sell-on clause of up to 35 per cent.

If Vítek explodes in the Championship and beyond, United want a way back in — or at the very least, a share of the profit.

United’s revolving door in goal

The exits come as United reshape their own hierarchy between the posts.

Senne Lammens is established as number one, and summer signing Karl Darlow has arrived on a free transfer to provide experienced competition. The Wales international’s move followed Andre Onana’s loan return to Trabzonspor, another significant shift in a position that once felt settled.

Now Vítek goes permanently, and Bayindir follows on loan. The churn is deliberate. United are clearing space, trimming numbers, and backing a new pecking order.

Bayindir’s Spanish opportunity

For Altay Bayindir, the move to Celta Vigo offers something he has rarely enjoyed at Old Trafford: a realistic chance to play regularly.

Since joining from Fenerbahce in 2023, the 28-year-old Turkey international has largely operated in the shadows as a back-up option. Now he is close to a season-long switch to LaLiga, with Celta covering his wages and performance bonuses built into the agreement.

Crucially, Celta hold an option to buy Bayindir permanently, reportedly set at £3.5m. Should they trigger that clause, a sell-on percentage will also be included, giving United a stake in any future move.

For Bayindir, it is a clean audition. For Celta, it is a low-risk shot at securing an international goalkeeper. For United, it is another step in a wider reset.

Two keepers out, a new order in. The question now is whether this bold reconfiguration leaves United stronger when the real pressure of the season arrives.
