Manchester United's Goalkeeping Overhaul: Angus Gunn Leads the Charge
Manchester United are preparing a ruthless reset of their goalkeeping department, with Angus Gunn emerging as a leading target in what amounts to a full-scale overhaul behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
Recruitment staff have identified the Scotland international as a prime candidate to anchor a new-look hierarchy, a move driven as much by European ambition as by dissatisfaction with the current options. Gunn’s name has climbed to the top of the list after his recent run of games for Scotland in World Cup fixtures against Haiti, Morocco and Brazil, where his composure and experience under pressure impressed United’s scouts.
There is also a familiar face helping his case. Gunn’s long-standing relationship with United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, dates back to their shared spell at Manchester City’s academy. Wilcox knows the goalkeeper’s temperament, training standards and personality first-hand, and that historical link is understood to carry real weight as United narrow their search.
Onana and Bayindir pushed towards the exit
The shake-up is not subtle. United have made a clear internal decision: both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir are available for transfer.
Onana, signed to be a transformative presence with the ball at his feet, has been explicitly told that the club intend to cash in on him during the current window. The message has been delivered, even if the timing remains uncertain. Unless a buyer is found quickly, the Cameroonian is still expected to report back for early pre-season in two weeks’ time, an awkward limbo that underlines how quickly the landscape has shifted for him.
Bayindir’s path looks more straightforward. The Turkish goalkeeper, who never truly threatened to become first choice, is widely expected to head back to Turkey, with a move to Besiktas on the table once he returns from his post-World Cup break. He has been granted an extended three-week holiday after Turkey’s early exit at the hands of Australia and Paraguay, but the expectation is that his future will be resolved soon after he comes back.
Lammens’ rise forces United’s hand
The upheaval is not just about exits. It is also about protecting the status of a young goalkeeper who has seized his chance.
Senne Lammens has quietly become one of the most significant stories of United’s season. Since his debut against Sunderland last October, he has nailed down the No 1 shirt and, crucially, earned the trust of the dressing room. He is now regarded as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Yet Champions League football changes the equation. United’s return to Europe’s elite competition brings a punishing schedule and higher stakes, and the hierarchy are adamant that Lammens must be backed by proven, experienced competition rather than a bench full of understudies.
That is where Gunn fits the plan. At 28, with Premier League and international experience, he offers a level of assurance United believe can both push Lammens and protect him. The idea is not to block the Belgian’s progress, but to ensure that the club are not one injury or suspension away from a crisis.
Darlow watched, Vitek restless
Gunn is not the only name under consideration. United have also monitored Leeds United’s veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow, a reliable, low-drama option who would bring years of English football know-how to the dressing room.
Inside the club, the picture is more complicated. Young loanee Radek Vitek is due to return, but he has made it clear he does not want to come back simply to sit on the bench. His reluctance to accept a pure backup role adds another layer to the puzzle as United try to balance ambition, development and dressing-room harmony.
The pressure to get this right is obvious. United do not just need numbers; they need a structure that can withstand the strain of domestic and European competition.
Pre-season limbo before a sharp Premier League test
For now, pre-season could throw up some awkward scenes. If no transfer is agreed in time, Onana may find himself back in a United shirt for friendly fixtures against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18 and Rosenborg on July 24, even as the club work to move him on.
Bayindir, once his extended holiday ends, is expected to sort out his proposed switch to Besiktas, clearing another space in a department that is being stripped back and rebuilt.
There is not much room for error. Whatever shape United’s goalkeeping unit finally takes, it will be tested almost immediately. The new Premier League campaign opens with a trip to newly promoted Hull City on August 22, a fixture that will offer an early glimpse of whether this bold reset has delivered stability or invited risk at the most unforgiving position on the pitch.
