Manchester United Face Pressure Ahead of Fulham Clash

Manchester United head into the weekend needing more than just three points. They need a reset.

One win from four Premier League games has turned the start of the 2026/27 season into a slog, and the midweek Carabao Cup exit to Brighton only darkened the mood. The pressure around Michael Carrick is no longer a murmur. It’s loud, it’s restless, and it will be inside Old Trafford again when Fulham arrive on Sunday.

The tension has not been helped by a bombshell away from the pitch.

JJ Gabriel storm rocks Old Trafford

On the eve of that Brighton defeat, news broke that JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old forward widely tipped as United’s next great academy star, has told the club he wants to cancel his registration.

For a fanbase clinging to the promise of youth, it landed like a punch.

Gabriel, crowned Premier League Under-18 Player of the Year last season, has been with United since the age of 11 and is seen by many inside and outside the club as a talent of almost limitless ceiling. Now he wants out.

United, though, are not ready to simply watch him walk away.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the club are determined to try to change his mind, but not by throwing money at the problem. There will be no rushed mega-contract, no panicked financial play to keep him.

Instead, United plan to talk. To Gabriel himself. To his family. To his representatives. To remind him what they believe his pathway at Old Trafford can be and to rebuild trust around a teenager who has suddenly become the centre of a storm.

Crucially, the club still hold the option to challenge or reject his request to cancel his registration. Legally and structurally, United are not powerless here. But they know forcing a 15-year-old to stay is a very different thing to convincing him this is still the right place for his career.

For Carrick, already shouldering the weight of a faltering start, it is another problem swirling around a club that craves calm.

Carrick handed Baleba lifeline

Amid the noise, there is at least one shaft of light.

Carlos Baleba, the £65million summer signing from Brighton, is finally back on the grass and in full training. The 22-year-old has not played a minute for United yet, his move immediately stalled by an ankle injury picked up in pre-season with his former club.

Now, at last, a debut is in sight.

The Athletic report that Baleba could feature against Fulham, raising the prospect of Carrick being able to call on a midfielder the club have viewed as a long-term cornerstone of their rebuild. The Cameroonian has been on United’s radar for some time and is expected to be a key part of their engine room for years.

The club, though, are weighing up how quickly to push him.

Figures at United are considering keeping Baleba at Carrington over the upcoming international break rather than releasing him to join up with Cameroon, prioritising his fitness and integration into Carrick’s system. That might mean supporters have to wait until next month to see him at full tilt.

Right now, even the hint of his presence on the bench against Fulham would feel like a small but significant boost.

Because this is where United stand: a manager under strain, a wonderkid threatening to walk away, a new midfield pillar just emerging from the treatment room. The table says it’s only September. The mood says the season is already on the line.
