Manchester United Pursue £40m Transfer for Brighton Star Ferdi Kadioglu
Manchester United’s long search for a new left-back has taken a surprise turn, with sensational claims in Turkey suggesting Brighton’s player of the year Ferdi Kadioglu is on the brink of a £40m move to Old Trafford.
The story comes from Turkish outlet AS Marca, who posted on X that United are “set to transfer” the 26-year-old Turkey international from Brighton for £40m, with 10% of the fee – around €4.7m – due to his former club Fenerbahçe.
No major English outlet has verified the deal yet, but the rumour is not arriving in a vacuum. Brighton, a club used to seeing their best players picked off by the elite, appear to be bracing for more upheaval.
Brighton brace for another raid
The Seagulls have already been preparing for a turbulent end to the window. Carlos Baleba is “primed” for a move to Manchester United worth £65m plus £5m in add-ons, while right winger Yankuba Minteh is being seriously weighed up by Liverpool, who are considering a third offer in the £65m–£70m range.
Those two alone would mark another lucrative summer on the south coast. Yet neither was crowned Brighton’s standout performer last season. That honour went to Kadioglu, a versatile, aggressive left-back whose form has now apparently dragged him into United’s orbit.
There is a potentially telling subplot. Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Brighton have agreed a €12m deal with Young Boys for left-back Jaouen Hadjam. The 21-year-old is expected to sign a contract until June 2031 and fly to England within 24 hours to complete the move, with Young Boys also due add-ons.
A new left-back arriving. Their current player of the year, also a left-back, suddenly linked to United for big money. The pieces line up a little too neatly to ignore.
United’s left-back dilemma
Erik ten Hag and United’s hierarchy have made no secret of their intention to recruit a left-back before the window closes. The plan is not just to cover Luke Shaw, but to find someone capable of pushing – and ultimately replacing – the England international.
Lewis Hall has long been the preferred option. United admire his profile, his age, and his homegrown status. Newcastle, though, have drawn a hard line. After already cashing in on Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, the Magpies have no interest in losing another key asset.
Head coach Matthias Jaissle underlined that stance last weekend, insisting there is “no chance” Hall leaves when pressed on the defender’s future. For United, that sounded very much like a door slamming shut.
Attention has also been directed towards Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde. United have held talks with his agent Jorge Mendes, who has been actively testing the market for potential new opportunities. ESPN reported that United’s ideal scenario would be a loan with an option to buy, a structure that would protect them financially while giving Balde time to adapt.
Balde, though, would rather stay at Camp Nou. He is only prepared to move if Barcelona decide to cash in and accept a bid. A face-to-face meeting with head coach Hansi Flick is expected to play a decisive role in clarifying his future.
So while Hall looks locked away and Balde remains in limbo, Kadioglu’s name suddenly surges to the front of the queue.
Ferdi Kadioglu: the unexpected solution?
Kadioglu, who made his name at Fenerbahçe before joining Brighton, offers exactly the kind of profile United have been chasing: energetic, technically secure, and comfortable playing high up the pitch. Brighton trusted him enough for him to emerge as their player of the year last season, a significant accolade in a side built on smart recruitment.
AS Marca’s claim that United are “set to transfer” him for £40m would also represent the kind of mid-range fee the club have been more willing to sanction this summer, rather than the eye-watering sums of previous windows.
The Fenerbahçe sell-on clause, if accurate, fits with the structure of many of Brighton’s incoming deals and gives the Turkish giants a stake in their former player’s next step.
A window that won’t sit still
United’s late-window manoeuvres are not limited to left-back. They have agreed a deal for a striker, with Everton missing out, and are still being linked to further moves across the pitch amid calls from Gary Neville and others for multiple signings to prevent the season from unravelling.
Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta has been floated as a late attacking option for United and Tottenham, with the situation at Selhurst Park described as “ugly” as the clock ticks down.
Yet the left side of defence remains the most glaring structural issue. With Shaw’s fitness concerns and the lack of a natural, long-term rival on that flank, United know they cannot afford to enter the season undercooked there.
If the Turkish reports are to be believed, they may finally have their answer in Ferdi Kadioglu – and Brighton, already moving for Jaouen Hadjam, may once again be preparing to cash in and rebuild on the fly.
The question now is simple: will this latest twist in United’s left-back saga actually land, or is there still another turn to come before the window slams shut?
