Manchester United Eye £43m Move for Edmond Tapsoba
Manchester United face a £43million bill if they want to drag Edmond Tapsoba out of Bayer Leverkusen – and they are not alone in the chase.
The Bundesliga champions are reluctant to lose their captain, but sources in Germany say the door is open if a “suitable financial offer” lands on the table. At this stage, that figure sits at around £43m, a price that underlines both his status at Leverkusen and the level of interest from England.
United in the queue – with company
Tapsoba is firmly on the radar of Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham, with fussballdaten reporting that all three Premier League clubs are in regular contact with the defender’s camp over potential terms.
At 27, the Burkina Faso international is in his prime and has been described in Germany as “tailor-made” for a side that wants to build from the back at high tempo and defend big spaces. That profile explains why he fits neatly into the recruitment models of United, Newcastle and Spurs, all of whom want centre-backs comfortable on the ball and aggressive without it.
Leverkusen know exactly what they have. Tapsoba was a central pillar of their remarkable domestic campaign last season, scoring five goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances and wearing the armband as a key voice in the dressing room. He signed a new deal earlier this year that runs until 2031, a contract that gives the German club maximum leverage in any negotiations.
Even so, reports in Germany suggest the player’s openness to a new challenge has fuelled the growing speculation. Newcastle, in particular, are said to view him as a ready-made leader for the heart of their defence.
United’s shifting priorities
United’s interest in Tapsoba is not new. They were heavily linked with the defender in 2024, before ultimately moving for Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt in that window to reshape the centre of their back line.
This summer, the club’s transfer focus has largely been elsewhere. Under Michael Carrick, United have targeted upgrades at left-back and in central midfield as they try to rebalance the squad.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already arrived at Old Trafford to bolster the middle of the park, but there remains scope for at least one more addition in that area if the right opportunity appears.
On the left side of defence, United have pushed to strengthen but hit resistance. They have held an interest in Lewis Hall, yet Newcastle have made it clear the full-back is not for sale. A similar stance has come from Club Brugge over Joaquin Seys, leaving United to reassess their options on that flank.
Carrick wants more
Carrick has not hidden his desire for further reinforcements before the window closes.
“We’ve improved the group,” he said. “We’ve improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.
“So the players that we’ve brought in, I think we’ve done really good business and we’ve got some top, top, top players. So we’re delighted with that. We always want to improve.
“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We’re conscious of that and we’ve got to keep pushing.”
The question now is whether that push stretches to a £43m move for Tapsoba in a market where Newcastle and Tottenham are already circling – and where Leverkusen, armed with a contract to 2031, can afford to wait for someone to blink.
