Manchester United Debutants Tielemans and Santos Set for Hull Clash
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are poised to step into the real thing at last.
Both midfielders are expected to make their competitive Manchester United debuts against Hull City this weekend, as Michael Carrick begins his first full campaign as permanent head coach with a side that already feels subtly reshaped in his image.
Santos, the £50million summer arrival from Chelsea, has barely missed a beat since walking through the door. He featured in all six of United’s pre-season friendlies, a constant presence in the middle of the pitch and a clear indicator that Carrick trusts him to start when it matters on Saturday afternoon.
Tielemans has taken a different route to the same stage. Granted a mandatory three-week break after helping Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, he joined the group later than most. Any fears over his sharpness eased when he completed the full 90 minutes in the final warm-up game against AC Milan, a sign he is ready to be thrown straight into the Premier League grind.
Carrick may not overcomplicate things. The midfield that began the 4-2 defeat to Milan in Poland — Santos, Tielemans and captain Bruno Fernandes — could well be the trio he leans on again, with Fernandes restored to his favoured No10 role, where he can dictate the tempo and press high.
Defensive Choices
The real puzzles lie behind them.
At centre-back, Lisandro Martinez’s lack of match rhythm has opened the door for youth. Ayden Heaven is pushing hard to start alongside Harry Maguire, potentially edging ahead of Leny Yoro in the pecking order for the trip to one of Maguire’s former clubs. Carrick must decide whether to back experience or reward the youngster’s momentum.
Senne Lammens is in line to start in goal, while Luke Shaw’s place at left-back looks secure. The right flank of the defence is less settled. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are locked in a tight contest for the starting spot, offering Carrick two very different profiles and a late call to make based on how he wants United to build from the back.
Attacking Dynamics
Higher up the pitch, Patrick Dorgu has rewritten his own job description. Either side of a cruel injury suffered in January against Arsenal, he has been reinvented as a left-winger, adding direct running and width that Carrick clearly values. That evolution creates a headache, though, because Matheus Cunha also does his best work drifting in from that same left side.
The knock-on effect is felt through the front line. With Benjamin Sesko not yet ready to start after a three-month lay-off, Cunha is expected to deputise again as the central striker. That shift frees Dorgu to keep his place on the left and nudges Bryan Mbeumo back to the right, where his work rate and delivery give United a different edge.
New faces, new roles, and a coach stepping into his first full season in charge — Hull away might only be the opener, but Carrick’s selection on Saturday will offer the clearest early glimpse of what this Manchester United side is going to be.
