Manchester United Firm Stance on Bruno Fernandes Transfer
Manchester United have drawn a clear line in the sand over Bruno Fernandes – and they are not budging.
Senior figures at Old Trafford have made it plain they intend to reject any offer for their captain before next month’s transfer deadline, shutting the door on interest from Galatasaray, Juventus and AC Milan.
Galatasaray warned off
Galatasaray had been weighing up a proposal that could have climbed to 50m euros (£42.7m), a serious move for a 31-year-old playmaker. On paper, it looked like the kind of bid that might at least start a conversation.
United’s response? Don’t bother.
The message from inside the club is blunt: any approach from the Turkish champions would be a waste of time. Juventus and AC Milan, who have also been monitoring the situation, have been given the same answer in private briefings. United are not open for business.
That stance marks a stark contrast with last summer. Back then, United told Fernandes it was his decision whether to accept a huge offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. The midfielder later admitted he felt “hurt” that the club were prepared to leave such a call entirely in his hands.
This time, there is no ambiguity. United have taken ownership of the situation and nailed their colours to the mast.
Contract clock ticking
Club sources insist there have been no formal bids for Fernandes so far. They also insist he is not for sale at any price.
Fernandes has one year left on his current deal, with an option for a further season. He is understood to prefer staying at Old Trafford, and that aligns neatly with United’s public and private position.
A £57m release clause in his contract has now expired, removing the one clean escape route that could have allowed a rival to bypass negotiations. Even so, talks over a contract extension have yet to produce an agreement.
United, though, feel they hold the stronger hand. The club control the extra-year option, the player wants to remain, and there is no active clause inviting a cut-price raid.
Fans make their feelings known
If anyone at Old Trafford needed reminding what Fernandes means to the fanbase, Dublin provided it.
During last week’s pre-season meeting with Leeds, the reception for the Portugal international was raucous. Every touch, every wave, every hint he might be staying was greeted with noise that carried well beyond a routine summer friendly.
That outpouring has only reinforced a view inside the club: allowing any doubt to linger over their commitment to keeping Fernandes would go down badly in the stands. United know they must be seen to fight to keep their talisman, not simply cash in.
On the pitch, the numbers back up the emotion. Fernandes registered a Premier League record 21 assists last season, orchestrating United’s attack and dragging them through difficult spells with his relentlessness and creativity.
He is widely expected to be named PFA Player of the Year for 2025-26 at a ceremony in Manchester next week, recognition of his influence and consistency.
So while Europe’s heavyweights circle and test the water, United’s position is set. Their captain stays. The only question now is how long they can turn that stance into a new contract that matches his status at the heart of their project.
