Manchester United Prepare Opening Bid for Lewis Hall
Manchester United are preparing to test Newcastle United’s resolve with an opening bid for Lewis Hall, in what is shaping up to be their most expensive move of the summer – and a deal that Fabrizio Romano says has already been “approved” internally at Old Trafford.
This is not just another transfer enquiry. It is a raid on a club already reeling.
United circle as Newcastle bleed talent
Newcastle’s summer has felt like a slow unravelling. Alexander Isak gone. Anthony Gordon gone. Sandro Tonali gone. Bruno Guimaraes, by all accounts, heading for Arsenal with the deal “moving in the right direction” and the Brazilian keen on the move.
Eddie Howe has walked away, with the club’s talent drain among the reasons for his exit. The project that once looked so sharp-edged and ambitious suddenly feels exposed.
Newcastle are spending, yes, but they are gambling on youth and potential, on players without Premier League minutes in their legs. The squad looks thinner, greener, more vulnerable. A season of pain has been predicted in some quarters.
Into that uncertainty steps Manchester United.
Hall at the top of United’s list
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano underlined just how serious United are about Hall.
He described the 19-year-old left-back as “an ideal player” for United and confirmed Hall is “on the Manchester United list, for sure” and “internally approved” by the club’s hierarchy. United, he said, “really appreciate” Hall and see him as a key addition they would like to make.
This is not a speculative name being kicked around in meetings. Hall is a target. A real one.
United have already made contact to gauge the situation, sounding out what it would take to bring the defender to Old Trafford. The plan is clear: strengthen a problem position with a young, homegrown full-back comfortable in possession and aggressive out of it.
But there is a problem. Newcastle.
Newcastle dig in over prized full-back
Romano was equally clear on the Tyneside stance: Newcastle do not want to sell Lewis Hall.
They have already banked major fees this summer from Tonali, Gordon and, expectedly, Guimaraes. The message from St James’ Park is that the sales must stop somewhere, and Hall is where they intend to draw the line.
“Newcastle don’t want to sell Lewis Hall,” Romano stressed. “That’s the indication, that’s the message.”
So the situation is set: United see Hall as a top target. Newcastle see him as non-negotiable.
The tension lies in what happens when a club that “don’t want to sell” are faced with a bid too big to ignore.
£60m move in the works
TEAMtalk insider Graeme Bailey reported on July 30 that United’s opening offer is being drafted, with Newcastle valuing Hall at around £60m.
At that price, Hall would become United’s most expensive signing of the window, eclipsing the £50m they have committed for Andrey Santos (£48m plus £2m in add-ons). For a teenager with limited top-flight experience, it is a staggering figure – and a clear signal of how aggressively United intend to reshape their squad.
United’s early work in June and July laid foundations. This move would be different. This would be a statement.
Romano has been consistent: United are not finished in the market. August has arrived, and they are ready to move again.
Now the question hangs over Tyneside: after losing stars across the pitch and watching their manager walk away, can Newcastle really afford to cash in on one more cornerstone of their future – or will this be the battle that finally tests the limits of their resistance?
