Barcelona's Long Game for Julian Alvarez: A Strategic Pursuit
Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has not ended. It has simply been delayed.
The Catalan club spent the summer pushing to pry the Argentina international away from Atletico Madrid, only to run straight into a brick wall at the Metropolitano. Atletico refused to even sit at the table with a direct domestic rival, and that hardline stance forced Barca to shelve any immediate deal.
Alvarez has now committed to staying in Madrid at least until January. The message is clear: he will lead Diego Simeone’s line for the first half of the La Liga season, while the noise around his future hums in the background.
Short-term fix, long-term obsession
With Alvarez off-limits, Barcelona moved quickly for Gabriel Jesus to plug the gap up front. The Brazilian answers an urgent need, but he is not the centrepiece of the project.
Inside the club, Alvarez remains the chosen one.
According to Spanish programme El Larguero, Barcelona ring-fenced a significant chunk of their transfer budget specifically for a marquee No 9 – and then chose not to spend it this summer once Atletico blocked talks. Journalist Santi Ovalle outlined the strategy in blunt terms: the hierarchy refused to compromise on their primary target.
“They’ve saved the money they were going to spend on a top No. 9 to go after him again,” Ovalle said. “Barca doesn’t want Julian for this transfer window; they want him for a five-year project.”
That line sums up the thinking at the Camp Nou. Jesus is a solution for now. Alvarez is the plan.
A board convinced he’s “better than any other striker”
Ovalle also underlined just how highly Barcelona rate the Atletico forward.
“They are convinced, as we’ve been saying in recent days, that Julian is better than any other striker. So they’re saving the money they were going to spend on a new one to come back and explore the transfer market.”
That belief has shaped the entire window. The club scanned the market for centre-forwards and walked away unconvinced by the alternatives, unwilling to pour a huge fee into someone they see as second choice. Instead, they chose patience over panic.
No marquee signing now, but the war chest remains largely intact.
Waiting for the door to open
Atletico’s refusal to negotiate this summer closed one window. Barcelona are betting that another will open.
The plan, as reported in Spain, is already drawn up. The club will test the waters again in January, exploring whether a mid-season move is possible. If the winter market proves too tight or too hostile, the intention is to come back even stronger in June 2027 with what is described as a full-scale offensive.
For now, Alvarez must block out the speculation and re-establish himself under Simeone, maintaining the sharpness and output that made him such a coveted target in the first place. Every goal he scores for Atletico will only reinforce Barcelona’s conviction.
They have their stopgap in Gabriel Jesus. They have their budget protected. And they have their eyes fixed firmly on one man.
