Manchester United Eyes Alejandro Balde Amid Barcelona Exit Talks
Manchester United are closely tracking Alejandro Balde’s situation at Barcelona after the Catalan club authorised his agent, Jorge Mendes, to actively seek a new destination for the left-back.
The 22-year-old’s future at Barça has reached a critical stage. He was left out of the squad for Sunday night’s trip to Elche at the Martinez Valero, a clear signal from the club that they are preparing for life without him and are deep in negotiations over his exit.
Balde’s name is circulating across England, Portugal and Italy. According to Catalan outlet Sport, the destination that excites him most is Manchester United.
United’s left-back puzzle
The interest from Old Trafford is no coincidence. United need a left-back. Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his contract. Diogo Dalot has been pushed higher up the pitch. Both Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are natural right-backs being asked to plug gaps rather than define a flank.
Balde fits the profile: young, quick, technically secure and already tested at the top level with Barcelona. United have already made contact with Mendes to explore the deal, but they are keeping their options open. Manchester Evening News reports that the Spain international is not the only full-back on their list.
One factor has shifted the ground under Balde’s feet in Barcelona. The fierce competition from Joao Cancelo. After spending the summer insisting he wanted to stay and fight for his place, the reality of sharing the left side with Cancelo has forced him to reassess his position.
Price tag vs budget
Here is where the deal gets complicated. Barcelona need to create financial room in their wage and transfer structure, but they are in no mood to sell Balde cheaply. Just a few months ago, they valued him at around €40–45 million.
At the same time, United are weighing a far cheaper alternative: Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old Racing Santander left-back. His release clause is thought to be around £16 million, a fraction of what Barça want for Balde.
That financial gap explains United’s stance. They are watching Balde closely, maintaining contact, but have not yet submitted a formal offer. The only concrete bid on the table for the defender so far has come from Benfica, and Sport reports that proposal falls well short of Barcelona’s valuation.
Aston Villa currently look the most capable of matching Barça’s demands, but they would first need to sell one of their own players to make the numbers work. Until then, the race remains open and slightly stalled.
Barça plan for life after Balde
Inside Barcelona, the direction is clear. With the door now open for Balde’s departure, the sporting department has already started searching for a new left-back. Without a replacement, the position would be left to Cancelo and Gerard Martin, a thin rotation for a club expecting to go deep across multiple competitions this season.
United, meanwhile, must decide how aggressively they want to move. Do they pay a premium for a ready-made option in Balde, or pivot to the cut-price promise of Salinas?
For both clubs, the answer at left-back could shape far more than just one flank.
