Manchester City Sign Ayyoub Bouaddi for €100m Deal

Manchester City have struck a huge deal with Lille for Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, landing one of the most coveted young players in Europe and beating Liverpool to his signature.

The 18-year-old, who lit up this year’s World Cup with Morocco, will move for a total package worth €100 million ($116.9m). City will pay an initial €95m ($111m), with a further €5m ($5.9m) in add-ons as the club reshape their midfield after Rodri’s departure.

Lille had dug in. They wanted Bouaddi for at least one more season and made it clear he would only leave for a substantial fee. City met the price, and the French club finally relented in this window.

Bouaddi arrives with heavyweight endorsements already attached to his name. Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, speaking on The Rest Is Football during the World Cup, could hardly have been more glowing.

“Really impressive — he’s only 18, but he plays like a 30-year-old,” Vieira said. “He’s got the tactical awareness, I think he’s always well-positioned. He’s got the technical ability to play out from the back and a really strong personality. I quite like the midfield three from Morocco, but of course, he’s the talent in this team.”

That World Cup showcase put half of Europe on alert. Liverpool were among the clubs strongly linked earlier in the summer, with several sides tracking the teenager after his performances on the biggest stage. City, though, have moved hardest and fastest.

This is no fringe signing. Bouaddi is expected to be a central pillar of City’s new-look midfield. He has agreed a five-year contract with an option for a further year, a commitment that underlines how central he is to the club’s long-term planning under Enzo Maresca.

The move follows the club-record arrival of Elliot Anderson for £116m ($158.2m), another major piece of a rebuild forced by the exits of Rodri and Bernardo Silva. Two leaders of the Guardiola era have gone; City are paying premium prices to construct what comes next.

And they are not done.

Tijjani Reijnders left in the past week, and City’s hierarchy are determined to replace every key departure to arm Maresca properly as he steps into the daunting role of succeeding Pep Guardiola. The recruitment drive has rolled into the final day of the window with no sign of slowing.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez sits high on the list. City admire him, but prising him from Stamford Bridge will not be easy, with Chelsea unlikely to consider anything below $130m. Roma midfielder Manu Kone is also under serious consideration as City work deep into deadline day.

Bouaddi, though, is the headline act for now: an 18-year-old World Cup standout, a €100m bet on the future, and the player tasked with helping to close the gap left by Rodri in the heart of City’s midfield.

For Maresca, the question is no longer whether the club will back him. It is how quickly this expensive, ambitious new engine room can start to run like the one it replaces.
