Manchester City to Make Opening Bid for Enzo Fernandez

Manchester City are ready to test Chelsea’s resolve with an opening offer for Enzo Fernandez, as Enzo Maresca pushes hard to reshape his midfield before the transfer window closes next week.

The Argentina international has been placed at the top of Maresca’s list after a summer of upheaval at the Etihad, with four senior midfielders already gone and City’s engine room stripped of some of its most reliable figures.

Chelsea have long known about City’s interest. Earlier in the summer, the London club set an unofficial cut-off point for negotiations and made it clear any deal would start at a minimum of £120m. That date came and went without a breakthrough, but City have not walked away.

They are expected to return with a fresh attempt to land the 25-year-old in the coming days, in a move that would reshape not only their own squad but also the balance of power in the Premier League’s midfield battles.

If Chelsea do relent, Fernandez would become one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history, behind only Liverpool’s £125m swoop for Alexander Isak last summer. City themselves are already operating at the very top end of the market: they paid £116m to bring Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier in this window and could now break their transfer record for a second time in the same summer.

The need is obvious. Tijjani Reijnders has departed for Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia in a £52m deal. Barcelona have taken Rodri for £65m. Newcastle have agreed a £52m fee for Nico Gonzalez. Bernardo Silva left earlier in the summer and has since joined Real Madrid. That cluster of exits has left Maresca short of technical quality and experience in central areas, and Fernandez has been identified as the player to anchor the next iteration of City’s midfield.

There is also a personal thread running through this pursuit. Fernandez retains a positive relationship with Maresca, who left Chelsea in controversial circumstances on New Year’s Day before taking over at the Etihad in June. That connection adds an extra layer of intrigue to negotiations between two clubs who have become used to competing on and off the pitch.

For Fernandez, it caps a turbulent spell at Stamford Bridge. Signed from Benfica in 2023 for £107m, he arrived as a centrepiece of Chelsea’s rebuild but has rarely enjoyed a settled environment. Alongside his agent, former Paris St-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore, he has explored interest from Real Madrid, only for the Spanish giants to issue a statement denying any move for him.

Tension has simmered since Chelsea’s Champions League exit to PSG in March. In the aftermath of that defeat, Fernandez grew increasingly critical of the club, and his future has been a recurring storyline ever since.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso addressed the situation in July, revealing he had held a private conversation with Fernandez. He refused to disclose what was said, leaving the midfielder’s long-term position at the club open to interpretation and fuelling speculation as the window ticked on.

On the pitch, the mood has been no less complicated. Fernandez came off the bench in Monday’s 3-2 win over Fulham at Stamford Bridge but was met with boos from sections of the home support, who targeted him over his role in England’s World Cup exit. The reaction underlined the strained relationship between player and fans at a time when his future is under intense scrutiny.

At full-time, he briefly celebrated with the away supporters and his team-mates, then headed straight down the tunnel, the first Chelsea player to disappear from view.

With City now readying a formal bid and the deadline looming, that swift exit may not be the last abrupt departure linked to Enzo Fernandez this month.
