He is not just another prospect. Bouaddi lit up this summer’s World Cup and had already announced himself with a starring role in Lille’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid in 2024. That night changed how Europe looked at him.
He plays from deep, dictating tempo, threading passes, drawing pressure and then slipping away from it. The profile is familiar: a deep-lying conductor, very much in Rodri’s mould.
That matters for Maresca. With Elliot Anderson already signed to drive from box to box, City need someone who can sit, see the whole pitch and pull the strings. Bouaddi fits that description.
There is another gap to fill too. Bernardo Silva has gone, so City are not simply replacing Rodri; they are trying to rebuild an entire midfield ecosystem. Bouaddi’s 30 Ligue 1 appearances last season hint at a maturity beyond his 18 years. He already looks comfortable carrying responsibility.

If Bouaddi is the future, Enzo Fernandez is the ready-made solution Maresca already knows inside out.
City have been heavily linked with the Argentina international, and within the Etihad hierarchy he is currently viewed as the leading option. The catch is the price. Chelsea are standing firm on a £120m valuation, a huge fee when City have already committed £116m to Anderson.
Maresca’s admiration for Fernandez is no secret. At Chelsea, he handed him the armband when Reece James was unavailable. That decision said plenty. To Maresca, Fernandez is not just technically gifted; he is a leader, the kind of presence City will lose if Rodri walks away.
No player made more Premier League appearances under Maresca at Chelsea than the Argentine. His game is aggressive, front-foot, full of forward runs into the box and risk-taking on the ball. For a coach who wants his midfielders to dominate possession but still hurt teams, that blend is gold.
Fernandez returned to Chelsea training this week after helping Argentina reach the World Cup final, a campaign that ended in frustration as he was sent off in defeat to Spain. Around him, uncertainty has swirled all summer.
Chelsea have now drawn a line in the sand. Any offers must land before 17:00 BST on Friday as the club looks to settle his future before the new season. They are prepared to fully reintegrate him and still see him as a key figure.
On the numbers, he is hard to ignore. Fifteen goals and seven assists in 54 appearances last season, while also topping this shortlist for successful passes, passes into the box and completed balls into the final third. If Maresca wants control with incision, Fernandez gives him both.

He carries the ball through lines, plays into the box and relishes physical duels. For a coach who demands bravery in tight spaces, those qualities are invaluable.
He would not arrive as a like-for-like Rodri clone. He would tilt the midfield in a different direction: more vertical, more dynamic, a little less controlling. But sometimes a departure of a cornerstone player forces a tactical evolution.
