Manchester City Pursues Enzo Fernandez in Record Deal

Manchester City have opened talks with Chelsea over a move for Enzo Fernandez, with the Argentina World Cup winner now sitting at the top of City’s midfield shortlist in a pursuit being driven by Enzo Maresca.

City view Fernandez as their priority addition in the middle of the pitch after sanctioning Rodri’s move to Barcelona, and there is growing confidence inside the club that a deal will get done before the window closes.

Chelsea, for their part, are ready to let Fernandez go — but only on their terms. The London club want their valuation met and are insisting on bringing in a replacement before signing off on any sale, even if that replacement does not mirror Fernandez’s profile.

Chelsea’s deadline passes – but City stay calm

Chelsea had attempted to seize control of the situation earlier in the window, setting a firm deadline of Friday, August 14 at 5pm for a written £120million bid for Fernandez.

No offer arrived.

City were tied up finalising Rodri’s exit to Barcelona as that cut-off came and went, choosing not to be rushed into a proposal they weren’t fully comfortable with. Inside the Etihad, there has always been a belief that Chelsea would soften their stance as the window wore on.

That conviction has only grown. Despite the missed deadline, City still sense an opening.

Fernandez wants reunion with Maresca

On the player’s side, the direction of travel is clear. Fernandez is keen on the move and on reuniting with Maresca, under whom he operated with greater attacking licence at Chelsea.

The Italian coach used him as an eight and even as a ten at times, a notable shift from the more disciplined six role he had occupied at Benfica. City see that versatility as a key asset, a way to refresh a midfield now losing its long-time anchor in Rodri.

Chelsea, aware of the player’s desire and City’s need, are now expected to push for either a fee higher than the original £120m mark or a more favourable payment structure than the one discussed before August 14.

A deal that could rewrite Premier League records

If those negotiations tip in Chelsea’s favour, Fernandez could climb into the elite bracket of Premier League transfers. Should the final package surpass the £125million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer, the 25-year-old would become the most expensive sale in English football history.

Chelsea’s midfield puzzle

If Fernandez goes, Chelsea will move to reshape their midfield, but not necessarily like-for-like.

Alex Scott is one name on their list. The Bournemouth midfielder is admired at Stamford Bridge, yet the south coast club expect him to stay. Chelsea saw a £64million offer rejected earlier in the summer and have not returned with a fresh bid. There has been no new contact between the clubs, leaving that avenue blocked for now.

That could push Chelsea toward a different type of signing. Given how Maresca used Fernandez higher up the pitch, the recruitment team are open to a more creative attacker, either centrally or from the right, rather than a pure holding midfielder.

Pedro Neto holds the key

One more piece could unlock Chelsea’s next move: Pedro Neto.

If Neto leaves, Chelsea may feel emboldened to pursue a central or right-sided attacking midfielder or forward to rebalance the squad. There is no certainty he will go, but the club are prepared to listen to offers close to £100million.

Should that kind of bid land and be accepted, Chelsea’s summer suddenly changes shape — and so does the landscape of their negotiations with City.

For now, everything circles back to Fernandez. A player who wants the move. A manager who sees him as the cornerstone of his new project. A selling club determined to be paid at the very top of the market.
