Manchester City Eye Enzo Fernandez as Transfer Deadline Approaches

Manchester City are weighing up a move for Enzo Fernandez as the transfer window ticks towards its deadline, with Enzo Maresca pushing hard to land the Chelsea midfielder as his marquee signing.

Fernandez has sat near the top of City’s list all summer, identified by Maresca as the ideal replacement for Rodri after the Spaniard’s departure ripped a hole through the heart of their midfield. City have already moved once in that area, bringing in 18-year-old Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi after his eye-catching World Cup displays, but the plan has never been to stop there. They want another major addition in the middle of the pitch.

Alongside Fernandez, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Roma’s Manu Kone are also under consideration, yet the Argentine remains the name Maresca keeps circling back to. He is the one City’s new manager is understood to “love” as a profile, and the one the club are now seriously considering bidding for despite the complications around Chelsea.

Those complications are not small.

Earlier this month, Chelsea set a clear line in the sand. Clubs were told to submit offers for Fernandez by a Friday 5pm deadline, with the asking price pitched at up to £120m. Manchester City simply let that deadline pass. They did not meet Chelsea’s terms, but they did not walk away either. Their interest, as things stand, has survived the clock.

That’s partly because the deadline itself has started to look softer than first advertised. When Xabi Alonso was asked about Fernandez last week, he refused to give any guarantees over the player’s future. No firm “he’s staying,” no public closing of the door. Just a manager insisting the midfielder was working hard in training ahead of Chelsea’s Monday Night Football clash with Fulham.

Then came the team sheet.

With Alonso juggling several injury issues before his first competitive game in charge – including the absence of Moises Caicedo – it felt almost inevitable Fernandez would start. Instead, Alonso paired Reece James with Romeo Lavia in central midfield, leaving Fernandez on the bench.

When the Argentine finally came on at Craven Cottage, he walked into a split verdict. Fulham fans booed. Chelsea supporters responded with strong backing, a notable shift from the mixed reception he received when he came off the bench against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge in their final pre-season friendly around 10 days earlier. The mood around him is clearly volatile, but he still has a core of supporters inside the club and in the stands.

The real fault line, though, runs between Chelsea and Manchester City.

Relations between the two clubs are strained. Chelsea’s season was badly disrupted around Christmas when Enzo Maresca left the club, a departure that forced City to pay £17m in compensation. That saga has not been forgotten at Stamford Bridge. Any negotiation over Fernandez will carry that backdrop, and Chelsea’s stance on price will be watched closely given the earlier £120m figure.

So the question now is sharp and simple: what are Manchester City prepared to pay for Maresca’s top target?

City have room to move. They have sold a record number of players in this window and, as a result, should have significant funds available. The structure of any offer, and Chelsea’s willingness to reopen talks after their self-imposed deadline, will decide whether this becomes the defining late move of the window or a saga that drags on into the next one.

For Maresca, who has already nailed his colours to Fernandez privately, the answer could shape the entire rhythm of his first season in charge.
