Manchester City continue to pursue Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, even after finalizing an £86 million agreement for Lille's promising midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. Manager Enzo Maresca is reshaping the club's midfield following Rodri's move to Barcelona, aiming for more reinforcements.
Midfield Revamp Progresses with Bouaddi Signing
City’s acquisition of the teenage sensation from Lille hasn't stopped their interest in Fernandez, according to reports from The Guardian. The team has already invested heavily in midfield talent this summer, including spending £116 million on England international Elliot Anderson. The deal for Bouaddi totals €95 million (£81.4 million) upfront plus €5 million (£4.28 million) in possible add-ons.
Ayyoub Bouaddi, an 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder, drew attention from Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea before City secured his signature. He made nearly 100 appearances for Lille and became their youngest-ever player at just 16 years and three days during a Conference League match in September 2023.
This transfer reportedly sets a new record for Lille, surpassing the €80 million Arsenal paid for Nicolas Pepe in 2019. Bouaddi has signed a long-term contract running through 2031, with City holding an option to extend for another year.
Fernandez Still on City's Radar Amid High Price Tag
Despite the significant investment in Bouaddi, City's pursuit of Enzo Fernandez remains active. Earlier this summer, Fernandez expressed his desire to leave Chelsea after a move to Real Madrid fell through. He is reportedly keen on rejoining Maresca, having worked with the Italian coach during his time at Chelsea.
The main obstacle lies in Chelsea's £120 million asking price, which City consider too high compared to their valuation of the Argentina international. As the transfer window nears its end, City faces a decision on whether to meet that price after already committing large sums to midfield upgrades.
Midfield Challenges Highlight Need for Reinforcements
Maresca’s push for more midfield options follows a shaky start to the Premier League season. City's midfield struggled against Bournemouth on the opening day, conceding an early goal from Marcus Tavernier. Though City rallied to win 2-1 thanks to late goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol, the performance revealed vulnerabilities after Rodri's departure.
With Bouaddi set as a key long-term addition, City's willingness to pursue Fernandez depends on Chelsea adjusting their valuation. The club is weighing the benefits of another major signing against the costs already incurred this summer.
