Man City vs Coventry: Enzo Fernandez Set for Etihad Debut
Manchester City have thrown money at the squad. Now Enzo Maresca has to make it make sense.
After a frantic Deadline Day that delivered Enzo Fernandez, Iliman Ndiaye and Ayyoub Bouaddi, City go into Saturday’s clash with Coventry not just stacked, but crowded. Depth is no longer a luxury. It’s a selection problem.
Fernandez walks straight into the spotlight
Fernandez is the marquee arrival. Signed for a British record-equalling £125m, the Argentina international has not come to Manchester to watch from the bench. All signs point to him starting and making his Etihad debut from the first whistle.
His presence instantly reshapes the midfield. Marc Guehi’s brief audition as a holding midfielder appears to have run its course – a smart trial, but nothing more. With Fernandez available, City can restore a more orthodox structure in the centre, with Elliot Anderson expected to sit alongside him and give the team some balance.
That, in turn, tightens the squeeze further up the pitch. Rayan Cherki has opened the season brightly. Phil Foden is still the homegrown jewel. Neither is guaranteed anything now. This is exactly the kind of internal battle City wanted when they spent so aggressively. Shirts will be won, not handed out.
Ndiaye, a deal that could rise to £65m, looks more likely to be eased in. Bouaddi, signed for £86m, also seems set to wait his turn from the bench. When a club recruits at this level, opportunities vanish quickly for anyone not delivering.
Defence finally taking shape
Behind them, the back line is beginning to settle after weeks of chopping and changing. Abdukodir Khusanov is expected to continue on the right of the defence, with Ruben Dias and Guehi forming a physically imposing central partnership. Josko Gvardiol should hold his place on the left.
It looks more coherent than the early-season reshuffles that left City exposed at times. Against a Coventry side that will pounce on any uncertainty, that stability is not a luxury – it’s a requirement.
Injuries and the likely XI
Matheus Nunes is still a doubt and may not be risked. Jeremy Doku remains out with the calf injury he picked up against Arsenal in the Community Shield, removing one of City’s purest one‑v‑one threats from the equation.
Even so, Maresca has the tools to dominate the game. The expected lineup underlines just how ruthless the summer’s business has been:
