Liverpool's Transfer Window Woes as Brighton Secures Matías Orozco
Liverpool’s transfer window is drifting towards danger. The squad still needs surgery, the clock is ticking, and instead of adding depth, the club is watching targets slip away.
Many around Anfield expected five or six new faces this summer. Right now, they look miles off that. With Mohamed Salah’s future unresolved and no guarantee of a like-for-like replacement, even holding what they have feels like a battle.
On top of that, several first‑team players remain linked with exits. Stefan Bajcetic has even been discussed as a possible departure. Cody Gakpo’s name has been floated too, but unless sporting director Richard Hughes lands at least a couple of attackers before the deadline, Liverpool simply cannot afford to lose the Dutchman. The margin for error is gone. With less than a week left, it’s now or never.

Amid the scramble to fix the senior squad, Liverpool have also been working a quieter track: the academy. Recent years have seen a clear push to raid other youth systems, with Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha standing out as headline captures now nudging the first team.
This is the club that has long prided itself on a pathway from Kirkby to the Kop. For a spell under Arne Slot, that pipeline did not feel as open as before. With Andoni Iraola in charge, the expectation is that young talent will again get a serious look.
But one of the next planned additions will not be arriving.
“Matías Orozco (18) will be a new player for #Brighton. The deal closes for 4.8M$ + bonuses for 85% with Cali,” reporter Pipe Sierra posted on X. “The Colombian will travel tonight to Europe with his agent Leonardo Daza to complete the visa process, medical exams, and contract signing.”
Liverpool had tracked the teenager and held talks over a move for the midfielder. For much of the summer, they faced no serious competition. Then Brighton stepped in, and the landscape changed. The Seagulls now look set to add yet another highly rated South American prospect to their production line, leaving Liverpool to reassess.
Academy rebuild hits a snag
The setback comes after a strong push last season to strengthen the youth ranks. Mor Talla Ndiaye, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Samuel Martinez all arrived as part of a broader attempt to refresh the academy and future-proof the first team.
Of that trio, Ndukwe has impressed most inside the club. Liverpool were frustrated when he failed to accumulate enough points to secure a UK work permit. The solution was pragmatic: send him on loan to Levante, let him collect senior minutes, and hope he can return to Anfield in January better placed to qualify.
Orozco was supposed to be the next piece in that puzzle, another high-upside midfielder brought in by Hughes to keep the talent line stocked. Instead, Brighton have won the race, and Liverpool are back in the market with precious little time left.
Now they must identify an alternative who can match the Colombian’s potential and fill that planned slot in the system. The academy’s reputation remains strong, one of the most respected in England. The question, with the window closing and rivals moving aggressively, is whether Liverpool can keep feeding it at the level required to stay ahead.
