Liverpool's Transfer Window: Barcola Talks Heat Up
Liverpool’s summer has felt like a long stare at a transfer screen that won’t refresh. Now, Fabrizio Romano says the club are finally ready to hit fast-forward.
The transfer specialist has confirmed that Liverpool are “continuing their talks” with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola and expects the club to “accelerate” the move in the coming days. After weeks of back-and-forth, it points towards a decisive phase and a likely agreement for the highly rated French winger.
For Richard Hughes, it comes late in the day.
The sporting director is edging towards the exit, with his move to Al Hilal getting closer and his spell at Anfield winding down. His time in charge of recruitment has been anything but dull. One moment Liverpool were basking in another Premier League title. The next, they were navigating messy windows, missing key targets and watching those rejections play out in public.
In his first summer it was Martin Zubimendi who slipped away. In his third, Yan Diomande. The second window brought more joy, with several priority signings secured. The issue now is that too many of those buys have yet to fully justify their fees. The squad looks expensively rebuilt, but not convincingly upgraded.
That has sharpened the mood in the stands. When a club hands the keys of recruitment to a sporting director, supporters expect clarity: a defined plan, clear profiles, a list of alternatives, and a sense that the club is half a step ahead of the market, not chasing it.
Recent weeks have told a different story.
At times, Liverpool have looked like a club throwing darts in the dark, hoping one lands somewhere near the bullseye. It is a dangerous way to approach a window in any summer, let alone one where the Premier League season is only hours away.
The squad still feels unfinished. Holes remain across the pitch. Most significantly, Andoni Iraola does not yet have the full set of players required to impose his style. The clock is ticking, the fixtures are coming, and the tools are incomplete.
This is not the summer Liverpool imagined.
Something has to give, and fast. Yet the Barcola saga has dragged on for weeks, possibly months, without a breakthrough. It has started to resemble a stand-off, a test of who blinks first. That is a luxury a short-handed squad can’t really afford.
Even if Barcola does arrive, the job is far from done. The void left by Mohamed Salah on the right remains huge. Liverpool still need another winger capable of operating on that flank, someone who can offer goals, width and reliability in the biggest games.
Ibrahim Mbaye has been floated as a possible answer, but senior figures at the club have cooled talk of anything advanced. For now, that interest is described as exploratory rather than concrete. No bid, no agreement, no solution.
So the core problem remains: Liverpool need reinforcements, they need them quickly, and the pool of realistic options is shrinking by the day.
Romano’s update offers at least one clear direction. Talks with PSG over Barcola are active. Liverpool, he says, are ready to step up the pace in the coming days. After such a laboured pursuit, that shift suggests a belief inside Anfield that a deal is within reach.
If they finally get it over the line, Barcola could be the first major piece of a late-window scramble.
The question is whether Liverpool, with Hughes on his way out and Iraola still waiting for his ideal squad, can turn one big move into a coherent finish to a chaotic summer.
