Liverpool's Need for a Specialist Right Winger

Jamie Carragher has warned that Liverpool “desperately” need to sign a specialist right winger, as the club pursue a deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.

Talks are under way for the 21-year-old, but the former Liverpool defender is far from convinced that Barcola is the answer to the Mohamed Salah question at Anfield. For Carragher, the profile is wrong and the priorities are skewed.

The issue is simple in his eyes: Barcola is at his best on the left, drifting inside onto his stronger foot. Liverpool, though, are already stacked in that area.

Responding to a Sky Sports post on X asking if Barcola could be Salah’s replacement, Carragher cut straight through the optimism.

“No, he plays on the opposite flank!” he replied, pointing out the imbalance in the current squad.

“LFC currently have three players who could play from the left in Rio/Gakpo/Wirtz & no one who plays from the right.”

It’s a blunt assessment, but it captures a growing concern among supporters. With Salah’s future a constant talking point and no natural heir apparent on the right, every transfer move in the wide areas will be judged against that looming vacancy.

Liverpool can chase talent. Carragher’s message is that they now need to chase the right kind.
