Liverpool Secure Rio Ngumoha's Future Amid Gakpo's Spurs Move
Liverpool are closing in on what they see as one of the most important deals of their summer – and it has nothing to do with a new signing.
The club now “fully expect” to reach an agreement with Rio Ngumoha over an improved contract, a move that underlines just how central the teenager has become to their plans after a breakthrough season.
Liverpool ringfence their brightest spark
In a campaign that sagged under the weight of inconsistency, Ngumoha was one of the few players who genuinely lit up Anfield. His cameos and starts carried energy, direct running and a sense that something might actually happen when he picked up the ball.
Many around the club felt he had done more than enough to earn minutes ahead of the struggling Cody Gakpo. The numbers weren’t the story – the impact was. He looked ready.
That form inevitably attracted outside interest. Bayern Munich tested Liverpool’s resolve earlier in the summer and were linked with a surprise move for the winger. The noise grew loud enough that Liverpool moved quickly to shut it down, and Bayern have since shifted their focus to other targets.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano captured the club’s stance in blunt terms this week, describing Ngumoha as “untouchable” at Anfield.
“Two wingers – because Liverpool’s intention is to add two wingers to the squad, especially if Gakpo goes to Tottenham – in any case, Rio Ngumoha is untouchable,” Romano said, stressing that the youngster was never close to joining Bayern and is viewed as an “absolutely crucial” part of Liverpool’s present and future project.
Big rise, bigger reward
Liverpool are now ready to back that rhetoric with a contract that reflects Ngumoha’s rapid rise.
TEAMtalk report that the club “fully expect to agree” an upgraded deal with the youngster and “no longer fear” losing him to a European heavyweight in the near future. When he first arrived, Liverpool handed him the maximum three-year contract permitted for his age. That ceiling has become a problem they are now eager to solve.
The new agreement, according to the report, will come with a substantial pay rise and performance-related clauses, including bonuses tied to international appearances. In other words, Liverpool are planning – and paying – for Ngumoha to become a fully-fledged senior figure, not just a promising academy product.
It is a clear signal: this is a player they intend to build around, not cash in on.
While Ngumoha stays, Gakpo looks for the exit
The contrast with Gakpo could hardly be sharper.
While Liverpool move to secure Ngumoha’s future, Gakpo is pushing to leave. TEAMtalk reveal that the Dutch forward has informed the club he wants to join Tottenham Hotspur, with his camp already agreeing personal terms in principle with Spurs.
The next step has been taken. Gakpo’s representatives have spoken directly to Liverpool’s hierarchy to make the player’s stance clear: he does not see his long-term future at Anfield and wants the chance to reboot his career in north London.
If Gakpo does get his move, it only amplifies the importance of Liverpool’s winger plans. The club are already in the market for two wide players, and any sale would accelerate that search. But amid all that movement, one thing is now obvious.
Whatever happens with Gakpo, whatever business Liverpool do out wide, Rio Ngumoha is the one they are determined not to lose.
